Trellis Bay Welcome Centre for June 2024 completion

A promised visitor centre at Trellis Bay, Beef Island may soon be a reality for residents and visitors to the territory, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has indicated.

Premier Wheatley told lawmakers that the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) is working to deliver the Trellis Bay Welcome Centre project and noted that the design phase has now been completed.

He noted that the Trellis Bay Welcome Centre project is being fully funded by the BVI Tourist Board and stated that they have money budgeted for the project.

“The RDA anticipates a construction start date in March 2024, with an approximate three-month window for construction. This project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June 2024,” the Premier said.

Dr Wheatley further explained that the Building Authority has approved the plans and noted that the designs will form part of a tender package for procurement of the construction of the Welcome Centre.

According to the Premier, the RDA has indicated that the tender document has been completed and is expected to be issued sometime next week.

Premier Wheatley also shared that his government is considering a master plan for the development of Trellis Bay in collaboration with other key stakeholders, including landowners, businesses, and the BVI Airports Authority.

Previously, Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn called for urgent attention to be given to the Trellis Bay area, noting that the area is often the first port for hundreds of visitors each year.

Penn argued that Trellis Bay has been a hub for tourism in the territory and for the many people from the sister Islands who commute through there daily.

“I see them (commuters) when they come down on the port, I feel so ashamed sometimes, most times when [it] is raining and they have to battle [and] navigate in the rain and get into the car or get into a taxi,” Penn said.

Penn pointed out that he previously worked with someone to conceptualise a visitor centre, but lamented the fact that the project remained languishing since that time even though the Tourist Board had the designs for years.

Seems to be engaged in continuous photo oops and perpetual campinging.

The BVI politcian today is all about accumlating staggering wealth through dis-honest legislation and more.

The people are just pawns in that effort.

The putting off of paying increments for another four years, while creating and enacting self enriching legislation speaks volumes of the inds of men and women in elected offce today.

  5. Jane says:

It’s going to be an open air shed is my guess like the new bus shelter in town. I am guessing there will be no toilets or baby change facilities nor air conditioning. Will there be plans for complimentary WiFi for our residents and high spending and loyal visitors? Will the landscape be graded and sealed and the disgusting dumpsters screened off? This will be a $100,000 shed at best.

  6. Last I checked says:

Trellis Bay has ALWAYS been district Eight. Why the hate on Nine? It’s THEIR turf..You can’t build a house on another man’s land. Why hasn’t Scrub built anything for their employees?Or Camano? Or Guana? And It’s 54 alright..but wrong century….no shelter/toilet and barely a dock since 1954.

  7. Me says:
