Triple threat | Rotary placing more focus on sister islands

Lynette Harrigan

Three Rotarians with strong ties to Virgin Gorda are simultaneously leading the territory’s Rotary Clubs, and with this triple threat, plans are afoot to lend greater attention to the sister islands this calendar year.

Lynette Harrigan is the 2018/2019 President of the Rotary Club of Tortola, while Vincent Wheatley and Rosemarie Flax are leaders of Rotary Club/Road Town and Rotary Club/Sunrise, respectively.

“We used to be focused a lot on Tortola. But, this year, being that we have three presidents associated with Virgin Gorda — myself from North Sound, President Vincent, and President Rosemarie who is married to a Virgin Gordian — we want to make sure we embrace all the sister islands in our plan this year,” Rotary President Harrigan told BVI News.

The service organisation is kicking things off with a food donation to the island of Jost Van Dyke. The food items were among a recent shipment of supplies from Puerto Rico.

Speaking more on her club’s initiatives planned for this year, Harrigan said: “We’re going to be working with the clinics on all the islands because we do have some funds that were already allocated, especially the clinics on Virgin Gorda. So, we are going to be taking a visit over there next week to see what exactly is needed.”

The Rotary Club will be continuing its philanthropic efforts by donating glucose monitors to local clinics and to the territory’s Diabetes Association.

Rotary will also be donating clothes to patients at the Safe Haven Transitional Centre on Tortola.

Harrigan revealed those initiatives at Rotary Club of Tortola’s first annual meeting for the 2018/2019 calendar year at The Moorings on Thursday.

@i wonder. Sounds more like a ‘treat’ to me. Happy for the sister Islands who always seem to be left out.

So cool. Happy for VG and see what you can do for Anegada and JVD while you are at it. Governments past and present have not done as much for them as they should have.Focusing more on VG is an excellent start.

  5. CW says:

VG and Anegada are the most exquisite islands by far- there is a reason all the high end villas are on VG and the only luxury camping in BVI is on Anegada. ( And less shootings!) Congratulations!
