Trusted voice: Shereen slams VIP tape, plugs 5-point action plan

Government legislator, Shereen Flax-Charles.

Ninth District candidate, Shereen Flax-Charles, has pushed back against the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) for using an old recording of her endorsing the VIP during the 2019 elections.

Now a candidate with the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), Flax-Charles is contending that the VIP failed at scoring points using her old endorsement of that party and only resorted to doing so because she is “the most trusted voice associated with their party”.

She argued that she herself had no business playing recordings of her opponents, which she claims exists, and said she has chosen to focus instead on the “all-out battle” for the future, wealth, security, and freedom of the territory’s children.

Five-point plan

Flax-Charles told residents she had ‘a real plan of action’ which she said will create more opportunities for young people and others in the district. She described these as ‘Prioritising Youth Empowerment’, ‘Distributing Crown Lands Fairly’, ‘Heightening Healthcare Services’, ‘Creating a Business-Friendly Environment’, and ‘Reforming the Public Service and Governance’.

The one-time Calypsonian said she believes that young people should be provided with internships and other initiatives that allow them to learn and grow in practical work environments. She also promised to develop a competent workforce which she said will be filled with individuals who are not only educated, but also knowledgeable about the work environment.

International-standard sports facilities

Additionally, Flax-Charles said she is committed to providing access to international-standard sports facilities such as an Olympic-class swimming pool and a regulation-size running track. She said this was important for young people in the Ninth District, pointing out that such experiences are paramount for the development of their athleticism.

Touching on the issue of healthcare on Virgin Gorda and Anegada, Flax-Charles bemoaned the fact that something as simple as dialysis cannot be offered in the district.

“The resources exist but our so-called leaders have not had the gumption to demand what we deserve. I was the only one that got up there and demanded,” Flax-Charles said.

She also claimed that a million-dollar deal for medical equipment at the Nurse Iris O’Neal Medical Centre disappeared when the donor “refused to have a backroom meeting”.

Land distribution

Flax-Charles assured residents that she is also determined to address the issue of land distribution. Arguing that young people on Anegada and Virgin Gorda need land, she claimed this has been kept from them and reserved only for those who are part of a ‘political in-group’. She shared plans to establish a fair and practical approach to land distribution which she said prioritises those who need the support and have the ambition to develop.

Home ownership, according to Flax-Charles, is also a priority and something she described as a first foray into true wealth building. The At-Large Representative said she has worked with developers to create an affordable housing model that utilises as little as an eighth of an acre of land but still affords residents up to three bedrooms.

“We must evolve beyond antiquated systems and instead look to solutions which have already been internationally implemented,” she urged. “And we have even had some success right here on Virgin Gorda.”

No matter what a Political Aspirant promises, it still will be up to the presiding Government and Minister assigned that Topics Portfolio to get any Results. Person should say”I will propose to accomplish” not what I am going to!

  6. VG Mind. says:

The lady has done, accomplished and helped many, but most are not fully aware of. It is believed, then, that her mind, heart, intentions and actions are genuine, focused and are in the right place.

Therefore, I urge all to move beyond personality and uninformed judgemental conclusions, seek and dwelve into the facts, draw informed conclusions, and give the Hon. Lady the job to continue putting her vision for the territory and its people into action.

Her political feet are now wet, they are now firmly on the ground, her political sensibilities have matured, and those realities have placed her in a greater position to skillfully undertake and execute her duties for and benefit the country and all of us.

We will never know how good she is or well meaning she intends to be if she is not given the opportunity to work for us.

That being the case, it is believed that the Hon. lady will sincerely strive to bring about what she has stated, for the youths, the people and the territory at large.

Hence, let us give the Hon. lady the opportunity to prove her worth by us once more, for and with us.

Am not sure the wake up call was made on the day politicians get a winner number to promised all the lovely packages or is it when they decided to go again to the polls. The silliness should have stop at the moment you realized that you could not get the wealth in the hands of the youth.

Distribution of crown land has been offered to youth in political promises since Noah build an Ark. you get in there and then fall asleep. We voting COY LEVONS. LEVONS in the first year get those crown land distributed to the young people, create a list of criteria. Second year move for Educational Scholarships big time, and create young people enterprises.Third year , more tourism development, VG got what it take to enhance and move to the big time of night life. Fourth year, go back to the drawing boards and look at the big picture and see what future generations will need to survive and strategize for election again.

Where is the legal authority on this statement you just made? Point to the section of the constitution or any other law that says this? We have to be more responsible with our mouths in this country. We do enormous damage to the country when we speak callously about things that we have no knowledge about or don’t care to know about.

  17. Positive says:

  18. Talk is Cheap says:

Anyone can decide to run for elected office, as is the case in the current campaign. One can drive around the Bvi and find all sort of things to talk about and can snap their fingers and the problems disappear. That is definitely not the case. First the Rep is part of a team as far as getting things done. (1) He/She must get the full corporation of civil servants who have been in those positions since God created heaven and earth. Their loyalty might be to the political party that didn’t win; creating reasons for their party to win in the next election. Projects must be included in the annual budget or run the risk of not being accomplished.
Redicullus: Candidates get on podiums and talk about what they are going to take on without knowing the financial condition of the government. They talk as if the money is already there. Last time I checked, Bvi doesn’t Print money. So reading from a page someone prepared for them making it seem as if anything they mention in their prepare talking points will be done; only to find out “that nothing go so tall”.I have heard candidates talk about turning a district into a Tourism mecca. I’ve listened to a candidate running for the second district. When asked what are the potential for Cane Garden Bay, His answer was that he saw the potential of an Under water Restaurant. Perhaps having taken a trip to Coral world. So whether Mr Levons or whoever on the campaign talks about their list of projects, unless the party members sit and put figures to their projects, they are just throwing out Pipe Dreams. Sadly Sometimes they get elected and shortly thereafter, the reality of the budget kicks in, in terms what can get done or must wait until.
