Turnbull, Malone clash in House of Assembly

Minister of Natural Resources and Labour Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull recently engaged Territorial At-Large legislator Carvin Malone in a mini war of words during the debates for the 2023 budget in the House of Assembly recently.

The two legislators clashed after Turnbull concluded his contribution to the debate where he reminisced on the events that led to the formation of the Government of National Unity earlier this year.

After Turnbull’s presentation, Malone rose in the House and criticised Turnbull’s presentation saying, “the honourable member spent 20 minutes of utterance of nothing else but aspirations of other members and had the nerve to ask for additional time.”

In response, Turnbull called Malone a poor communicator who doesn’t know how to express himself clearly. Turnbull also added that the present government is cleaning up the mess created by the last administration of which Malone was a part.

“The At-Large member who sat on the government side for three and a half years — no matter what he says or how he says it, you still won’t understand. Even when he just rose I don’t understand what he said,” Turnbull hit back.

“So Mr Speaker, I thank you again for allowing me to represent the people of the Second District, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour and for allowing me to clean up some of the mess that was left before I came into this position on May 5th,” Turnbull stated.

Deputy Speaker Neville “Sheep” Smith then cautioned both legislators that the budget debate would continue with a presentation from Sixth District Representative, Alvera Maduro-Caines. However the argument between the elected leaders continued even when Maduro-Caines stood to give her contribution.

I had the privilege since this guy is a Minister to hear him speaking to a few people as well as for myself and all he did was bad talk every government both present and past and not only the VIP Government. He also bad talk his own current ministry staff and other public officers. He praised all his efforts ONLY. This is the true character of this fellow. No wonder the NDP and him could not get along. He is power hungry and will do anything for power and would try to destroy anyone to get it.

I am not a political person nor support any one political party but I believe in being fair. We all agree that we need to continue to do better as a country but to state until he joined the government the government did nothing well other than create mess is not a fair assessment. The building of the new High School buildings to take the teacher and staff of ESHS out of those moldy building is major. Direct flights from the USA is major. The building of the new school at JVD is major. Construction of many new public roads and buildings in JVD and the other islands is major. Repairs to most government buildings and infrastructure on all islands (JVD, Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Tortola) that were damaged since Irma is major. Despite some may disagree but the handling of COVID which was the worse pandemic in 100 years was major especially when you compare the BVI government to how other governments handled this major pandemic. My point is that these and other major accomplishments were done in a time of little funds due to the damaging and lasting effects of COVID and it is not fair to judge any current government outside of this phenomenon. The government has done plenty good but we agree we still have a long way to go.

Malone in reality is one of the few articulate members of the HOA. That’s not one of his problems. It’s ironic how Mitch is separating himself from the reasons the COI was ordered. He must have forgotten his vote for BVI Airways.

Serious, Mitch is one of the main causes of the collapse of NDP. He is NOT a team player. I listened to him bash Myron on the radio when he was minister of education. I’m not saying you have to support everything your govt does. We have already seen how being quiet led to Andrew pulling this country in chaos but if you disagree with a policy hash it out in your meetings not in the public. When you are working for a company you can’t go in public criticizing your boss or the company. There are ways to disagree. I am disappointed in mitch.

Hon. Turnbull you seem to have selective memory and forgot that some of this mess was created during your administration. One of your own then colleagues caused the demise of NR&L. Where was your comeback then??

  9. People Tired, Dem Want Wha Dem Wok For says:

The public wants to see elected members arguing over when they are going to pay the OVER DUE INCREMENTS to the civil servants.

They want the them TO DO THE PEOPLE’S WORK; TO ENSURE THEY RECEIE THEIR INCREMENTS in a fair time, not to be waiting decades Mr. Governor.

We the retired folk are asking for our wages we already worked for yesterday, our INCREMENTS are way past over Please give them to us Mr. Deputy.

We are tired of wanting, we are broke, needy and desperate. We have medical issues that cannot be attended because do not have the cash flow as it is sitting in government coffers, Mr. Premier, while we the retired their children remain sick.

Therefore, it is imperative that government officials, such as the Deputy and Governor proclaim immediate orders for at the least 10 years since those wages are over due that those increments be order out to heir respective former employees immediately.

Such will enable much of the current suffering to dissipate and bad taste many retirees’ mouths to disappear. Some are a even willing to spill the names of elected officials who promised to do corruption just as former corrupted officials have done in the pas.

Pay the people what the done work for and move on for God sake.

I agree with you Mitch. The only part of that statement I understand is the part about you asking for more time.

  14. Bad person says:

People of the BVI Mitch Turnbull is a horrible, power hungry… child. He hides behind the cloth pretending to be a pastor to hide his ev** ways. He is not a competent person to hold a ministry. He criticizes everything and every body as a way to elevate himself and he was one carrying news to Governor Jaspert which were lies to hurt other people including some of his own colleagues at the time. Of all the members of the Assembly he is the most dangerous of all. The Apple does not fall far from the tree…

  15. Smh says:

Mitch is an opportunist period. He destroyed the NDP because he lost the party elections. He was obsessed with being a minister. Remember Andrew said he came to him asking to be deputy Premier to join them. He came to the same NDP he broke up asking to be a minister. When none of them gave him the answer he wanted he encouraged Skelton to form the PVIM to make sure the NDP didn’t win the election. After he won election the PVIM went dead because it was a party formed for evil and not for helping the country. They remained quiet for the last three years and now you will see them coming scooping power again in this election. I for one will not be voting for them.

  16. He ain’t no good says:

He will pay for those lies he told on the Labour Commissioner to get her out of her office. This lady was Sterling civil servant and he just destroyed that woman’s name for his own benefit.
