Two tropical waves to affect BVI this weekend

Two tropical waves are expected to affect the British Virgin Islands this weekend, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) has advised.

The DDM said it does not anticipate extreme conditions.

The first tropical wave will pass in the vicinity of the BVI Friday night and the DDM said current “dry and stable” weather conditions will “inhibit” any significant shower activity.

“As the wave moves out of the area, hazy conditions associated with dust from the Sahara Desert will once again gradually return with dust concentration expected to reach moderate levels by Saturday. Therefore, a noticeable reduction in visibility can be expected thereafter.”

The other tropical wave will pass over the area early Sunday, the DDM added.

The department said, in that instance, “marginal moisture and instability associated with this wave will increase the chance for shower activity”.

Wave heights are not expected to exceed six feet and a caution to small craft operators will only be in effect for Friday and Saturday. The DDM said it expects sea conditions to improve thereafter.
