UK a burden on the BVI, Willock says

Former Speaker Julian Willock

Just days after coming under fire for allegedly being involved in human trafficking, embattled former Speaker of the House of Assembly (HOA) Julian Willock has hit back at the United Kingdom (UK) which he accused of targeting him.

According to Willock, the UK has put a strain on the BVI’s coffers and has offered nothing in the way of assistance to the territory apart from vaccines during the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We don’t get nothing from the colonial administrative power outside of some vaccine we got and a COI and then targeting of our people. That’s what we have gotten,” the political hopeful stated on the Reggae 360 radio show earlier this week.

Willock has come under intense scrutiny after facing serious allegations of human trafficking, with officers seizing his electronic devices and travel documents. But the controversial former Speaker has since refuted claims of wrongdoing, suggesting that he is instead being targeted for his political activism.

“The reality on the ground is that… they (the UK] are a burden on us because we now have to pay,” Willock said. “And this Commission of Inquiry, the implementation [is costing] upwards of going on almost $2 million dollars. Nobody is talking about that.”

We need a reset

In the meantime Willock, who has also argued that there is a plot afoot by the UK to destabilise the BVI, said some 20 caucasian ex-UK officers are living off of the territory.

“They’re here living on us. They’re renting vehicles. We have to pay. We have to pay for the government,” Willock argued. “I mean, half the story in this country have not been told.”

He has since called for a reset in relations between the territory and the UK in the hope that things can be resolved.

“I want a harmonious relationship with the United [Kingdom]. I think we all need to sit and reset. I want to see a better relationship. We have to all reset and to say, ‘okay, we have all made mistakes, how can we work together?’”

You want to see a better relationship when you, Head coach, CSC Carvin and Natalio made it the worse it has ever been? There is nothing wrong with having disagreements but when you take it to the limit that you guys took it to it’s just inexcusable. Ralph and Orlando had their disagreements with them but we never saw it this low everrrr.

If we are going to really be a country of laws then we must remember that there is a presumption of evidence before guilt. You can’t want to be upright when it suits you. The prosecution must prove what they assert before a court. Until then it’s just allegations. Be fair.

  12. Sure about that? says:

The UK no doubt sees the BVIs itself as a burden. They’d like nothing better than a well run Terrritory populated by law abiding residents. The UK is only a burden on the BVIs because the UK is essentially asking the BVIs to clean up its act, much like a parent might tell their child who probably will not appreciate it at the time. Those that follow such advice likely will prosper, those who don’t won’t.

UK thinks that Willock is a burden on the BVI. So does most everyone in the VI
As you say @Romans whatever, and now the prosecution have proven what they asserted in court it is then time to pay for the crime and in his case pay his fine.

  33. This is why we have to listen to this man says:

Those in glass houses should not throw stones!!! True Hypocrites!

The U.K. will have 5 prime ministers in just 6 years. What’s gone wrong?

35% of the UK population stated that they trusted the national government. 42% of the population reported that they trusted local government and 55% trusted the Civil Service.

Now VI let’s take a look at the UK’s crime statistics and criminal activity. What are the most common crimes in Britain?:

    1. Homicide (UK police recorded 679 homicide offences in the year ending June 2022.)
    2. Knife/Sharp Instrument Offences
    3. Sexual offences
    4. Robbery
    5. Burglary
    6. Domestic abuse
    7. Crime against society (These include drug crimes, the possession of certain weapons, drunk and disorderly behaviour, ‘inciting racial hatred’, and affray. )
    8. Theft (with burglary removed and treated as a separate category, theft is truly sizeable. Categories includes vehicle theft, bike theft, shoplifting, and thefts from individuals without the use of force.
    9. Computer hacking offences
    10. The number one spot fraud (Particularly a. advance fee fraud- This is where victims are tricked into making upfront payments for fictitious goods and services; some have reported transferring money to receive postal deliveries that never come, for example. b. Financial investment scams have also been a big problem.)

  34. Anonymous says:

    That’s not a double negative.

  35. @ Rubber Duck says:

But aren’t the people on Balo a burden on society by definition? Isn’t that why they are locked up?

  36. To this is why…. says:

I don’t think RVIPF publishes crime statistics, but a persusal of the online media shows that we have plenty of the following
    1. Large scale drug trafficking, and lots of cannabis (petty though this may be)
    2. Murder, most unsolved, involving guns
    3. Corruption and large amounts of missing public funds
    4. Rampant discrimination against outsiders
    5. Thievery/burglary
    6. Domestic abuse
    7. Willful disregard of traffic law
All this reported on BVI news media.

You also don’t cite any statistics regarding the level of confidence BVI voters have on its government. Presumably that answer depends on whether they got an envelope at the last political meeting they attended (what gets them to the meeting in the first place).

For sure, the UK (like any other place) has criminality. The difference seems to be the level to which it is investigated and acted upon. Most of the COI report was no revelation to anyone who’s been paying attention to what’s been going on in the BVIs over the last 4 decades.

Lastly, please consider the hypocrisy of the decades of cronyism and corruption imposed by the BVI government on its people. Elected officials have made bank, and are quite comfortable thank you very much, possibky by turning a blind eye on the running of Colombian products. Meanwhile, our education system is dreadful, we have done little to create a future for our youth, we still have not figured out how to deal with waste, our roads are appalling, the NHI leaves something to be desired, employers withold tax from employees but don’t pay it in. And so on and so forth. Nothing new at all, yet still no evident political desire to make things right.

  37. @ TO THIS IS WHY says:

well you are on point and I’ve been saying the same thing too , but these jokers are programed hypocrites who are in love with themselves ,so they won’t see any mistakes that’s being made and make the nessary adjustments , instead they bthrow under the rug and pretend it never happened , sugar coat it and do the same sh*t all over again . so we only going in circles

  38. Busy Bee says:

Sounds remarkably like sour apples from someone that does not appreciate having oversight checking out his activities and dealings.

  39. Cartoon buffoon says:

Why does this m** m** remind me of Porky Pig?
