UK Conservatives demand better treatment for OTs
A UK-based Conservative group is calling for sweeping changes to how Britain treats its Overseas Territories, including the BVI, arguing that they deserve greater representation, stronger constitutional protections and more respect for their elected governments.
Conservative Friends of the Overseas Territories (CFOT), a special interest group with more than 50 Conservative MPs and members of the House of Lords, has released a policy paper outlining proposals to improve relations between the UK and its 14 Overseas Territories (OTs).
Among its key recommendations is dedicated Senate representation for each territory in the House of Lords, which would give OTs a permanent voice in Westminster on matters affecting their interests.
The group also wants parliamentary approval before fundamental changes to a territory’s constitutional status or sovereignty, alongside a Cabinet committee chaired by the British Prime Minister to oversee Overseas Territories affairs.
The group argues that the territories should be treated as democratic partners rather than jurisdictions managed through fragmented UK government departments.
“The Overseas Territories deserve a relationship with the United Kingdom that reflects their strategic importance, respects their democratic self-government and gives them a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their future,” said CFOT Chief Executive Giles Roca.
He described the existing relationship as piecemeal, noting that its underlying strategy has not been updated in 15 years. The report also proposes stronger security cooperation, long-term environmental funding and greater economic opportunities.
However, the recommendations are not official UK government or Conservative Party policy, and it’s unclear whether the recommendations will be considered by the government.

Don’t be fooled. By giving Territories representation in UK Government they are just building the case against Independence.
Don’t get me wrong this would be a great thing for the Territories and would make them a more inclusive part of the UK.
But I dont think they are really wanting better treatment. That is just politics. They are wanting to influence the calls for Independence.
The whole topic needs less of this and the sort of back handed dealing Natalio, and his propaganda plan disguised as education, is doing to push through his idea of Independence at the expense of the VI people.
The route is clear. Bring on the referendum. Find out what the people want. (Not greedy, selfish politicians.) And if the people want to stay with the UK yes then why not representation in the UK parliament as should already be the case.
