The United Kingdom has donated two armed response vehicles to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

The vehicles are specially equipped for the territory’s terrain and are primarily for transporting the newly-trained and enhanced Armed Response Unit.

Governor Augustus Jaspert officially handed over the vehicles on April 26.

The Governor said he was happy to present the gift, which represented a partnership between Britain and the BVI.

“These armed response vehicles are just part of the security plan that we have in the territory,” he said.

Governor Jaspert also praised local police, whom he said deserved the utmost respect.

“They do a most important job which is keeping us safe [and] it’s absolutely right that they are supported with the most effective training, the most effective equipment, and the back-up of all of the territory.”

UK project

The vehicles were donated under a UK-funded project which provided specialist armed response and command training. The project will also provide support for homicide detection, workforce planning, and funds to repair the Road Town and West End police stations.

Additionally, the project will provide funding for a law enforcement firearms response simulator, which will be used to enable officers to hone their skills in responding to incidents.

More funds coming

A media release from government said the UK is in the process of making additional funds available to the police force.

The funds will be directed towards providing further specialist training so the RVIPF can increase its armed capability to a total of 36 officers.

Cheers mates for the donation- just look how they will be in a years time after caring: lumber, blocks and other materials to those same officers properties for personal use!!

COP Matthews needs someone to police the police private use of government vehicles!

    • Don’t be ungrateful says:

It doesn’t take long for people like you to come out the woodwork with the negative comments. Why aren’t these same comments made when other government departments receive something. It was these same officers who left their families during Irma and Maria to be on the streets protecting and saving lives. Be grateful, just wish them well.

      THANK YOU OFFICERS!!!!

I think Britannica has a point. If they gonna use these vehicles for private use, it would be best if the UK had donated something else that cannot be abused.

By the way, did you say local officers were protecting and saving lives? Give some examples.

I believe the real credit should go to the UK military. Did you hear of the incident where some J-m–c-n hoodlums mouthed off at some local officers and the officers had to run to the UK military to come and get tough with the hoodlums?

Let’s hope there are financial donations on the horizon for Schools rebuilding.

But as history and political observation continue to point out, the colonialist will build a jail and fund policing in all its forms, but never, never education for those who suffered the injustices and inhumanity of servitude for centuries without a shilling ever being offered, so far..

    One wonder’s why?

It is hoped that that historical empirical fact/truth will change going forward.

    Meanwhile,the gesture is much appreciated.
