UK should give BVI more support for borders, says Smith
Deputy Premier Lorna Smith stated that the United Kingdom needs to provide more support to the BVI, particularly with funding for border security.
Smith acknowledged a recent supplementary budget allocation aimed at addressing some of the BVI’s urgent needs but emphasized that more support is necessary.
Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn criticized the government’s $2.5 million allocation for a detention centre to hold illegal migrants. “We got homeless people here too,” Walwyn said. “You know how many people called me that said they had nowhere to sleep during [Tropical Storm] Ernesto? We are spending $2.5 million to build a facility for other people when our people are homeless.”
Walwyn condemned the UK for its lack of support as a governing partner, suggesting that the UK could redeem itself by funding the detention centre.
However, Smith argued that instead of asking for funds for a detention centre, the BVI should seek direct assistance from the UK to strengthen its borders. She highlighted the difficulties in securing the BVI’s borders, describing them as “very porous” and overwhelmed by illegal immigrants.
“What I think we should be asking for and we should be insisting on is more support for our borders,” Smith stated. “We have a very porous border. It’s impossible for us to keep out the large number of aliens.”
The Deputy Premier pointed out that the BVI’s high per capita income would disqualify the territory from receiving UK aid for building a detention centre and criticised Walwyn, noting that as a former government minister, he should know better.
“He knows it is not going to be forthcoming. Our per capita income for many years has been such that the British are not going to give us $2.5 million to build a detention centre,” Smith said.

TS Ernesto just passed, and no assistance was asked for from the government. The ship departed the 18th August of the following week. This would have been free of charge since these patrols and assistances are already budgeted for in the UK.
