Underhill proposes access road from TPP to Main Street for tourism
Fourth District candidate for the National Democratic Party (NDP), Dr Sandy Underhill is proposing to transform Main Street in Road Town into a tourism attractuon if she gets eelcted into office.
A large part of her campaign is to make the territory’s capital more modern in a way that can be leveraged into a tourism marketing advantage and a centre for economic growth and development.
“The vision of this city transformation project is to establish a modern-day, aesthetically appealing, clean, and sustainable city centre where our culture, tradition, arts, sports and other services will provide economic growth and development for the territory,” Dr Underhill said while speaking at the recent launch of the NDP.
“One such proposed project that I am very excited about [is one] I would coin the ‘Main Street Preservation Project’ where I envision that there is an access road that connects the Pier Park to Main Street as a tourism attraction that signifies the stark contrast between the old and the new and symbolising our marked infrastructural and economic progress here in the BVI,” she stated. “This would include transforming Main Street into an economic centre of commerce while still preserving its rich history.”
Another area within which she promised to be an advocate is education, particularly at the secondary level. Underhill — a former principal of Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) — said she would lobby for secondary schools in the BVI to be properly separated into junior and senior schools.
She also proposed an education model that would see students from different schools in the BVI sharing resources in a mutually beneficial way.
Vanterpool’s endorsement
In the meantime, incumbent Fourth District (D4) Representative Mark Vanterpool has declared his intention to retire from representational politics and has endorsed Underhill to replace him.
“I thought long and hard about who I would endorse to carry on the work I’ve done in District 4 since 1991. And because of the work I did in that district for all those years, I wasn’t letting it go easy. But, man, when I see Sandy come forward, my heart is filled with joy to endorse Dr Sandy Underhill,” Vanterpool said and the political launch for the NDP.
Underhill said she was proud to have Vanterpool endorse her candidacy and noted that she has deep-rooted ties to District 4 where she was born and raised.

Blah blah blah. I am tired of these politicians and what they can do if elected and when elected noting is done.
I suggest you route that pie in the sky road right next to that glowing example of infrastructure, the sewer access where all the pumper trucks dump in town.
I’m not sure what version of transforming main street into a tourist attraction doesn’t see the vendors priced out of that street for more tourist targeted stores and do we need those?I think we should be finetuning what already exists just as much as adding more. Every Saturday I meet old tourists walking to the Botanic Garden only for them to learn its not open on the weekends, isnt that a loss of money?
All these plans and more are in the National Sustainable Development Plan passed by the VIP Government on how the BVI will progress and look from now into the next 20yrs. This was forward thinking by the government. Everyone should take time and read it.
No disrespect to this lady but I prefer to vote for the other lady Luce as she seems more genuine and steady.
