University awards honorary degree to local

Dame Janice Pereira

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is awarding a British Virgin Islander with an honorary Doctor of Law degree for outstanding contribution to the profession.

Dame Janice Pereira is said to be the first female and third local to ever receive such honour. She will also be among 17 ‘influencers’ regionally to receive the degree this year.

Dame Pereira will be presented with the degree at UWI’s open campus in St Lucia on October 13.

Premier Dr D Orlando Smith said Pereira has and continues to make her mark in the territory’s history and in the wider world.

“I extend heartfelt congratulations to Dame Janice on this well-deserved honour and for her contributions to this territory,” Premier Smith said.

Pereira first obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from the said university in 1979.

She attained her Certificate of Legal Education in 1981 from the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and was called to the BVI Bar in 1981 and in the Federation of St Christopher & Nevis in 2000.

She has served in various capacities such as Registrar of the Supreme Court, Registrar General of the Registry of Companies in the BVI, magistrate and judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court for Anguilla and Montserrat.

In addition, she has held the position of Justice of Appeal and Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court and was also awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Today Pereira serves as Chairman of the Judicial and Legal Services Commission in the BVI and in Anguilla and is a member of the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission of the Caribbean Court of Justice in Trinidad.

She has received numerous awards for her legal work.

Dame Janice is an excellent example of how hard work, and a refusal to rely on perceived discrimination against BVIslanders, permits our people to succeed. We need to follow her example, stop blaming others for our failures, and work hard.

  2. Congratulations says:

I must say that I read the article, and I can’t see her academic achievements:
      1. Pereira first obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from the said university in 1979.
      2. She attained her Certificate of Legal Education in 1981 from the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica and
      3. was called to the BVI Bar in 1981 and in the Federation of St Christopher & Nevis in 2000.

She might have in field experience, however her academic background is lacking. I believe each university has the right to give a way degrees, and her position achieve give credentials to the University, not the way around. However, congratulations are in order.

I would hire experience over schooling any day. I want to succeed, so hiring someone who has done the job before, and knows what they’re expecting is more vital than just having a degree. I hardly use the knowledge I’ve learnt from college, but more from experience.

Experience is the real world, degrees are guessing what to prepare for in the real world.

Why are you such a sorry hater, I know the dame personally and she is a brilliant scholar. if you were to go head to head with her YOU would lose.
stop the hating and learn to appreciate brilliance. Perhaps, you too might have become a dame what hinderer YOU?
