A small aircraft has reportedly crash-landed in a body of water at the Terrence B Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island.

Local emergency services personnel responded at the scene.

Police told BVI News the aircraft ‘overran the runway’ at the airport and ended in the sea.

“One person was rescued from the aircraft,” police said.

Amateur video footage sent to BVI News shows one resident performing what appears to be cardiopulmonary resuscitation – more commonly known as CPR – on a male who is believed to be the crash victim.

The full circumstances of the incident are not clear but BVI News will provide further information as it becomes available.

The BVI Airports Authority has released the following statement on the incident:

A C150 with one person on board departed the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (TUPJ) at 20:17Z (4:17pm) destined to Pointe a Pitre International Airport (TFFR) in Guadeloupe when it crashed into the waters off the east north east end of Runway 07.

BVI Airport Authority’s Rescue and Fire Fighting Service moved swiftly into action and was able to quickly secure the pilot, the only occupant of the aircraft.

The Airport is currently closed to facilitate the rescue effort.

What a terrible thing to post. I hope when you die that people show you more respect, even if you CLEARLY do not deserve it. Shame on you.

We dont know the minute nor the hour lord!. Its my biggest fear to travel i really hate plane ride. You know i does pray for all these mode of tranportation, air, land and sea. When im travelling i does pray months upon my day to travel, so tht God can cover each an everyone of us going on that plane, i pray for the pilots to be in goood health etc because its not them that take us to our destination , its God. I love Jesus, i feel so sad for the pilot…i know when he sees that plane going down all he can do is call upon Jesus for his soul. Sad sad sad.

Thoughts for the family, may the pilot rest in peace.

Just one comment – I thought the response of the BVI airport authority a bit inappropriately self-congratulatory. I think the first release referred to the emergency response having “ramped” into action to secure the person onboard (prior to the information that the person had sadly died). Given the person was dead i would think it more appropriate to leave out the pre-amble and simply say that the emergency services had secured / recovered the body.

Pilot who died today was my best friend his name H—- W—- V—- D– S—- native from Angola who was a resident of Miami, Florida— My condolences to his family.

  15. Hmm? Eye witness. says:

In the rush to be the first, it’s sad that the breaking news was false about aircraft running off the runway. FYI: The aircraft was in the air when it encountered problems. Please BVI News get your sources right because the public want accurate and proper news. It was such a sad moment.

  16. Member says:

In fact, the pilot was recovered by local divers that just happen to be in the area. The plane was attempting to takeoff when something prevented the plane to do so safely.

  17. CW says:

What are you clowns arguing over this for online? Show some respect! Of course I expect this from the BVI, always wanting to input your ignorance into all situations. Lay off for once. Tragedies don’t need your remarks. GROW UP.
