UPDATE: Power restored to Anegada hours before midnight on Sunday

Minister responsible for electricity Mark Vanterpool has followed through on Sunday’s promise to restore power to Anegada within 24 hours.

Power was restored to the sister island at 7:59 pm on Sunday, the minister said in a post on social media.

“I highly commend the team from the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) for a job well done! Thanks to the people of Anegada for their patience and the rest of the BVI community who supported the effort,” he said.

Anegada suffered an islandwide outage late Saturday because of a generator malfunction at its power station, BVI News understands.

Vanterpool said he became aware of the situation Sunday morning; following which he commissioned a vessel to carry a 290-kilowatt generator and other resources over to the island.

The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is working to restore power to Anegada by Sunday night into early Monday morning, Works Minister Vanterpool has said.

Anegada has been experiencing an islandwide power outage since Saturday because of a generator malfunction at its power station, BVI News understands.

Vanterpool said he became aware of the situation Sunday morning and a vessel carrying a 290-kilowatt generator and other resources was ferried to the island.

Vanterpool said the generator is “sufficient to power up the island of Anegada”.

An additional 60-kilowatt generator was also brought over to Anegada to provide further assistance, Vanterpool said.

“It is important to note that, in the interim, essential services on Anegada, such as fire, police and the clinic, have backup generators in operation,” the minister added while assuring Anegada residence that the BVIEC will do there best to rectify the problem ‘swiftly’.

As residents await power restoration, those using standby generators are being advised to employ qualified electricians to hook up these generators.

  4. Political Observer (PO) says:

The article asserts that there was an island-wide power outage on the sister island of Anegada due to a generator malfunction. Thus, the question(s) is does Anegada power station only have one generator? If so when does that generator go offline for maintenance? From an operational, customer service perspective, should not Anegada have a back up generator?

Yes. If it did, it is highly unlikely that it would not have had an island-wide black out. The territory seems to always be in a reactive crouch. Nonetheless, if the reports are true, the BVIEC sending over a 290 KW, and 60KW is encouraging.

  5. Not so ...... says:

Both BVIEC and the Ministry have known for the longest time that the generating station on Anegada has been in a terrible state. As usual this Government does nothing for the infrastructure of these islands, let alone the sister islands. I’d say they should be ashamed, but we all know they have no shame, and do not care! The real heroes here are those guys at the plant on Anegada that have worked miracles keeping things running. Thank you for all you have done!

  6. Anegadian says:

Power has not been fully restored to Anegada. The 290kw generator is not large enough to supply all of Anegada. The west end of Anegada is being blacked out to keep the load down to the capacity of the generator.

The one generator that we had was a 500kw generator. The replacement must be at least as large because the power demand on Anegada has grown to the point that the 500kw generator is barely adequate.
