USVI national granted $60K bail after drug find

Not the marijuana mentioned in the story

A St Thomas, US Virgin Islands national has been granted $60,000 bail with one surety after he was allegedly found carrying 60 grams of cannabis.

Twenty-nine-year-old construction worker Hakeem Leonard did not enter a plea during his first appearance before Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards on Monday.

He is facing charges for possession of a controlled drug and possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply to another.

Allegations

The court heard that on September 30 last year, Leonard was in police custody for an unrelated matter when he was searched.

Police allegedly found 58 dime bags containing cannabis tucked in his pockets.

When questioned by police, Leonard allegedly said: “You all catch me with everything, officer.”

He then allegedly claimed he received the drugs ‘for someone’.

He was subsequently arrested, charged, and granted $5,000 police bail.

His matter was adjourned to December 6.

Attorney Leroy Jones represents the accused.
