UWI Professor tells UN: decolonize Caribbean territories
Respected University of the West Indies (UWI) Professor Sir Hilary Beckles has called on the United Nations (UN) to recommit to the decolonization agenda for the remaining Caribbean countries that are controlled by European countries.
Professor Beckles made the call on March 25, when he was the keynote speaker at the UN’s commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Beckles told the UN that the Caribbean remains one of the few places in the world where there are still colonies and said decolonization is a part of the reparatory justice that Europe owes the descendants of those who were victimized by the transatlantic slave trade.
“Many of the islands of the Caribbean are still colonies. Britain has colonies, France has colonies, and the Dutch have colonies. Why do we have colonies remaining at this time in our history? I urge the United Nations therefore, as part of its reparatory justice programme, to recommit to the agenda of decolonization so that this crime against humanity which began in the Caribbean can finally come to an end with the ending of colonization,” the Professor said.
His call comes amid the BVI’s own ongoing call for a fairer relationship with the United Kingdom, one which excludes threats to take power away from elected leaders.
Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley recently announced that the United Nations (UN) Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24) is getting ready to visit the BVI for an assessment of the territory’s readiness for further self-determination.

Then take the ‘colonial title’ given by your ‘masters’ that sits in front of your name and rennounce it in front of the world. That would be a good start, and show you’re ‘all in’ and sincere before you start talk collectively about the desires of all Caribbean Nations without their peoples’ blessing. .
White people blogging again. We are up to your games. If you move the “Sir” from his name, he will just insert Dr. in front of it. Take your title and put it where the sun doesn’t shine.
Military take over and set locals free!
Friendly reminder Jamaica and Haiti are both independent nations whose economy has become none existent due to gangs and guns.
so the UK, USA, France, Netherlands all leave the caribbean behind so during hurricane season we have to beg for help, and so Haiti & Jamicia are the new models for freedom?
Now that is some funny shit!
what kind of mental, emotional and psychological illness is affecting british virgin islanders. i thought that the united nations was helping the bvi. i thought that being a british dependent territory of the united kingdom was better for the bvi. i thought that being a british oversea territory of the united kingdom was better for the usa. i thought uk citizenship was better for bvi islanders. i thought the bvi was territory and not a colony of the uk. only political corruption and drugs and mental, emotional and psychological illness plagues the bvi. i thought that the uk was a better country to help the bvi.
While Cayman Islands may have a large number of Jamaicans in its workforce the BVI has a high number of St. Vincentians. When some of these folks leave their homeland they lack relevant skills and in many instances the host country is forced to train, and care for them beyond what is expected, this in turn causes a burden on the host country.
The leaders of these independent Caribbean countries plaster themselves in office for a lifetime and ensure their generations succeed them while the common citizens continue to flee. In some instances some of these citizens return home and vote for these politicians while they do no good for citizens in and out of the country.
A modern partnership based on dignity and respect for our democracy. We are not their dogs they can shout orders at and we leap to obey.
Dominica for example,is rich in natural beautu.yet is struggling.selling passports likewise antigua,st.kitts, grenada, and st.lucia.right now many countries want to restict thier nationals from traveling.please let’s be foolish.
Hilary Beckles Where did you get the Sir in front of your name from? My question to you is who asked you to be a spokesman for the BVI? All of you who are dipping your nose in our business need to look at your own country and notice that a lot of your people can’t make it in their country and a lot of them are hear in the BVI and don’t want to leave. You need to decolonization yourself and get rid of the Sir. How can anyone Respect someone who stick their nose in other people business. For your information most of the BVI Islanders don’t want Independence, so why don’t you and the others back off and take Wheatley with you since he wants to live in an Independent country.
Leave it to an ignorant Virgin Islander to be unable to read and comprehend. Where in the article did he mention the Virgin Islands specifically? Dear Lord, forgive the ignorant Virgin Islanders for their inherent stupidity, not only were they born of sin, but born in sin (too much incest) and so many of them can’t properly comprehend what they read, in fact many are incapable of reading anything except the headline.
Hilary Beckles people like you live in the past, you said I urge the United Nations therefore, as part of its reparatory justice programmer, to recommit to the agenda of decolonization so that this crime against humanity which began in the Caribbean can finally come to an end with the ending of colonization,” the Professor said, Who the hell are to speak for the people of the British Virgin Islands.

Amazing people think the movement of black empowerment is over when it is clear as day it has just begun.
we will not see it in our lifetime but you can open your eyes to reality that the UK & US built off slavery are going to be in such a recession while unable to extract resources from allies in Africa, South America Eastern Europe and Asia.
Colonialism did not just affect black people or people of the caribbean, the whole of Africa, Australia, the Philippines, many nations was colonized. In Africa only Ethiopia who fought a war with the Italians & another country remained unconquered.
There is no one right way to live & the paradigm we have been through for the past 500 years is coming to an end through diversity
