Vanterpool resigns as HLSCC President | Minister dismisses claims of bullying

Judith Vanterpool

By Esther Durand, BVI News Staff

Education Minister Dr Natalio Wheatley has dismissed claims that Judith Vanterpool was bullied into resigning from her position as President of the H Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

When contacted on Tuesday morning, the Education Minister said Vanterpool tendered her resignation on Friday to the HLSCC board, despite being offered a new contract.

“It’s true. Her contract came to an end at the end of July 2019 and she was offered a new contract as President. [But] she resigned, so that’s an indication that she did not want to continue,” Dr Wheatley said.

“As far as allegations about bullying from the board, nothing never came to my attention about any bullying that was taking place. I am in regular communication with the chairman and deputy chairman of the board. I don’t see them as the type of persons to be bullying anyone, but they will demand accountability,” he added.

We were willing to continue with her as head

In the meantime, Dr Wheatley, a former lecturer at the educational facility further said: “From the perspective of myself and the board, we were willing to move forward with her despite her political affiliations.”

He said her political alliances “didn’t enter into the equation at all”.

The Education Minister further told BVI News that the current Vice President Dr Richard Georges would act as the interim President of the institution until a new President is installed.

With what the minister described as the strong leadership at the educational facility, he said he does not anticipate Vanterpool’s resignation to impact the college negatively.

Vanterpool, the wife of Opposition legislator Mark Vanterpool, was appointed President on August 1 last year.

Mrs. Vanterpool has proven that she is a woman of integrity and she would not be resigning without just cause. We do not expect the Minister to say anything contrary to what he has mentioned.

I guess you forgot when NDP forced Karl Dawson (VIP) out at HLSCC. This happens every time we have a new government, each government wants loyalty from their own – why is this still new to the BVI.

    Why is this surprising?

    The honourable Mark wife
    Seen as an NDP
Isnt that enough to see that she is frustrated ?
And oh before I forget, she is seen as an NDP with a top position.
This is not a one BVI, it’s a VIP BVI.

The minister too lie. A contract could take soo long? Two years was offered and then it went to one year. They have the chairman treating her like she’s a child. A woman with substantial education background. Since when a chairman dictates the everyday running of a corporation? Let me see how they going get this accreditation now. The victimization within this government is so real that even Stevie Wonder can see it. Everyone pretending like they don’t know what’s going on.

Interesting. To resign from a job despite being offered a new contract says a lot. People do not normally act this way unless something is terribly wrong to the point you say to yourself, it’s not worth it to stay.

Whether this lady was bullied or not, its apparent to the blind something was not right with her employ that caused her to make this drastic decision.

Now, I think Dr. Wheatley is a good guy and I like him personally, however, I would like to offer him a little bit of advise if he so care to take it:

NEVER put your hands on the bible for anyone with a defense such as:

“I don’t see them as the type of persons to be bullying anyone, but they will demand accountability”

Reason being: You never know what anyone is capable of unless you witness it yourself. It’s always best to await the facts before drawing any conclusions.

At any rate, every body and the mamma knows that politics lives @ HLSCC, and that is unfortunate.

Those kids attending HLSCC deserves the best as far as their education is concerned, and that institution should be about educating tomorrows generation devoid of politics.

Politics will ruin it for all. I can count 5 college presidents who have left that position in recent years.

This constant turn over is not good for the institution and the students who attend there. There needs to be some stability in that institution relative to it’s leadership, and this constant turn over needs to end.

The election campaign is long past and we are still seeing everything playing out as politics. It is very hurtful to see this low level of thinking at this crucial point in time. I am so disappointed and ashamed. What is going to become of us?

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark (territory). Tribal politics in the VI is a cancer that consuming good governance in the VI, pitting one Virgin Islander against the other. All Virgin Islanders have a right to earn living in the VI regardless of political affiliation. As a former elected member once quipped, everybody has to eat.

Personnel who support the opposing party still has to be professional on the job, adhering to policies and not letting their political philosophy influence their performance. Of course, if their political philosophy influence their performance, they should be coached, counseled and disciplined as needed and separated if no improvement in behaviour and performance are noted.

Further, the MEC should conduct a comprehensive review and obtain the facts before swearing on the good book for anyone. One’s children can fool and disappoint one and so too will friends and colleagues. Former US President Regan philosophy was trust but verify. The VI as a whole should be a great place to live, play and work; working at government must be a great place to work regardless of political affiliation.

Moreover, the only thing in life is constant is change. Today party A is in government but in a few short years it can be kicked to the curb and in opposition. It is a dysfunctional process if every government comes to power cleans house. This process stifles growth and development, adversely impact good governance, degrade the level of service delivery, diminish productivity and increase the cost of doing business. It is one BVI; one love.

Education and training is vital and critical for the continued growth and development in the VI. It is vital for developing a knowledge-based economy, increasing and improving the economic base. HLSCC is a key and animating force in contributing to delivering education and training. HLSCC is about the students and their education, not politics.

Politics is diminishing the quality of education. The instability and uncertainty at the institution is counter to attaining the vision and mission of institution. The wholesale revamping of the board and the frequent changing of presidents is detrimental to the institution.

Moreover, building a strong, quality and effective education programme takes planning, programming, budgeting and executing; it takes time. Playing musical chairs with presidents undermines this goal. The Board develops policies and the president and team executes the policies.

As such, the Board should stay out of the micromanaging the institution. With this approach, the institution will handicap itself in attracting the best and brightest and experience to lead the institution. It is unrealistic and insulting to give a president a 1 year contract and expect high return, unless he/she is not seen as the future leader of the institution. Let’s not slaughter our children education and bright future of the VI on the altar of politics, for history will be unkind to politicians who do so.

The people of the VI cannot and should not let tribal politics undermine the education and training of her children, her future.

MR. GEORGES IS THE FUTURE OF THIS COLLEGE HE HAS A SOLID FOUNDATION AND GREAT SHOULDERS TO LEAN ON FOR SUPPORT.( FORMER GIANT LEADERS IN EDUCATION) SOME EVEN ON THE BOARD. HE WILL SURROUND HIMSELF WITH YOUNG AND SEASONED ENERGETIC PEOPLE THAT WOULD MOVE HLSCC TO THE NEXT LEVEL. LOTS OF WORK BUT I HAVE TOTAL CONFIDENCE IN MR. GEORGES.

  26. What a shame! says:

Mr. Minister now has to tell lies like his leader. I hope that it’s worth it for you Sir. Mrs. Vanterpool was disrespected constantly by you, the chairman of the board and your political cronies working at the college. You interfered in everything. She didn’t have a contract while those who you brought to the college after elections and those you promoted got contracts contracts. Mrs. Vanterpool is a profession par excellence. When you see someone as level headed and professional as her leave a job you must know that the environment is toxic. Minister you were not a good employee at the college particularly when it came to giving students back their grades so Mrs. Vanterpool had to pull you up on many occasions. So I guess you are the boss now. What a shame! The VIP will destroy our country with this type of behavior.

  27. Truth says:

What a shame you are so correct in every word you wrote.even the brown skim lady they put to be AVP was trying to undermine her.The only usefulness she has at hlscc is to deal with accreditation. She is weak in evwry other area and also strong in backbiting and carrying news.Another red one they the minister brought back to do hospitality was actually campaigning for NDP.but she tells so much lies she even bull s**t the now minister and get her way.but soon the chairman and minister would soon find out what a liared she is always spreading rumors.
