Taddy Bay airport on Virgin Gorda will reopen at the end of next month.

The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) made the announcement on Wednesday and gave a specific reopening date of October 29.

The airport was closed due to the malfunctioning of the only fire truck that was at the facility but Managing Director of BVIAA, Denniston Fraser said all fire truck concerns have now been addressed.

“The rapid, fire-fighting, intervention vehicle that was purchased to replace the old vehicle has already been refurbished to meet the regulatory requirements and is on its way to the British Virgin Islands,” Fraser said.

All that remains now is for infrastructural works to be completed at the facility, Fraser said.

These works include constructing a station to house the new vehicle and the resurfacing of the airport’s runway.

“We will continue to keep the public apprised of the continuing developments at the Taddy Bay Airport and a further update will be given, if necessary,” Fraser said while relaying public apologies for the closure of the airport.

    Is Taddy Bay airport profitable? Just asking. How many flights do they have per day? How much to maintain a dirt strip? Just asking

    • Answers says:

      As a youngster, I grew up hearing the name of Virgin Gorda International Airport and the code is VIJ. Why is the name being changed? As to whether the Virgin Gorda Airport is profitable – is it profitable for people to live on Virgin Gorda? Well, it is on both counts. How many flights are there per day? Flights could easily outnumber those at TBLIAirport, especially if banking services and other necessary services were encouraged on the island as was the case for over forty years. Maintenance of the runway should not be that expensive, since it was done regularly from in the 1960’s.

      It is the only airport that was making a profit in the BVI. I was also and is the BVI’s most busiest airport.

    No disrespect for you being too young to know . The name has Always been Taddy Bay Airstrip . In the early 2000’s a “ filming was done / recorded at the airport and the name “Yirgin Gorda Interbatiobal “ was affixed . Maybe SOME ONE from Tourist Board will clear the air on this fir the benifit of our youth and those who have come to live amongst us
    Just saynn????
    Locaiiy the area / bay seafront was called Taylors bay
    At the ferry dock ( st Thomas bay ) was referred to as “ head of the bay” but local dialect said “ Heddgie bay “ as from COCO MAYA to ferry dock was one beach and the area of the old “ Dock side restuarant “ was known as “Town bay “
    Yes “ South “ was the TOWN back in the day as NOW you are old enough to see History has repeated itself : SOUTH is theTOWN in Virgin Gorda again ;
