VG dump fire sparks renewed call to move away from open burning

The major fire that started at the dump on Virgin Gorda Friday night has sparked renewed calls for the island and move away from open burning.

This call came from Territorial At-Large Representative Shereen Flax-Charles who is a long-time resident of the sister island.

“It (the blaze) just underscores the need for us to move away from open burning — which we are working on — and go towards a more sustainable way of dealing with waste on the island and really in the entire BVI,” she told BVI News.

The fire which is believed to have started around 7 pm on the evening in question has since been contained.

Officers from the Virgin Islands Fire & Rescue Service as well as police, the airport fire unit, and water trucking companies on the island had responded at the scene.

BVI News is yet to learn the cause of the blaze.

    Finally someone is speaking up.

And please don’t let this only be words. This burning is causing cancer for years now.

Quick action is required. Quick as in today please.

  2. Samuels says:

My business partner and myself has been reaching out to our government concerning the fires in the BVI. Alkebulan Minds Recycling Inc is here with a viable solution to our waste problems .

  3. LG says:

There is no reason for the burning
even if it takes a couple of years to get the full recycling program going there is more than enough room at the dump in VG without burning.
the burning is a major heath hazard, it is unacceptable to the people that live here.
we also have to think of the Tourism that we so badly want back, who wants to rent a expensive villa and be inundated with smoke.
the ban has to also cover burning yard waste.
