VG man slapped with multiple charges after domestic violence incident
A 24-year-old Virgin Gorda resident has been charged with multiple offences following an alleged domestic violence incident that reportedly left a woman injured.
BVI News understands that the young man, of a Valley address, was recently charged with assault and about three other charges related to his attack on the woman, said to be his ex-girlfriend.
According to information obtained from well-placed sources, the suspect was in a brief relationship with the victim, but they separated some weeks ago. It’s alleged that one day last week, the young man entered the woman’s apartment without permission and assaulted her. It’s understood that she sustained facial injuries during the attack.
Sources say the victim retaliated and damaged the suspect’s vehicle. It’s unclear whether she will be charged for her actions, but she later sought medical attention for her injuries. Her attacker was charged after the matter was reported to the police. He is said to appear in the Magistrate’s Court soon to answer the charges.
The incident has once again brought attention to concerns about domestic violence in the BVI, where women and children are the usual victims, with men being the usual perpetrators.
Local authorities have also encouraged victims and those who may be aware of abusive situations to seek help and report incidents before they escalate into more serious acts of violence.
