VI delegation meets with UK diaspora ahead of JMC

The Virgin Islands delegation met members of the UK-based diaspora at BVI House London, as part of its preparations for the 2025 Joint Ministerial Council (JMC), bringing together students, professionals, and residents for an evening of discussion and networking.

Officials invited the group to share views on national development across several areas, including education, economic opportunities, public service, identity, and connections with Virgin Islanders abroad. The event forms part of a series of diaspora engagements the government has hosted in London in recent years, with previous sessions focusing on career pathways for students and strengthening community links.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley led the gathering alongside senior officials. He stressed the importance of maintaining strong links with Virgin Islanders living overseas.

“Our people abroad are an essential part of the Virgin Islands’ story. Your insights, skills, and experiences continue to enrich our territory, and the government remains committed to ensuring you have pathways to contribute meaningfully to our collective future,” he stated.

Participants raised interest in more academic support, additional career opportunities for returning graduates, and new avenues for collaboration in technology, policy, health, and culture.

The gathering also formed part of the government’s wider preparation for the Joint Ministerial Council, where Overseas Territories leaders meet UK ministers. Premier Wheatley currently serves as President of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories Association (UKOTA), which coordinates joint territory positions ahead of the meetings.

The Premier will lead discussions on climate resilience, sustainable development, governance, and economic stability. The association has coordinated joint policy stances and advanced engagement with UK officials on matters including disaster preparedness, environmental management, trade, and regional security.

Dr Wheatley said unity among the territories remains important.

“Speaking with one unified voice strengthens our collective influence. As OT leaders, our cohesion ensures that the concerns and aspirations of our people are heard and addressed meaningfully. UKOTA’s work continues to demonstrate the power of partnership and solidarity among the territories,” he emphasised.

The government thanked the diaspora for its involvement, noting that the perspectives shared at the gathering will help shape the delegation’s approach at the Joint Ministerial Council.
