Vice presidency, other posts also up for grabs in NDP elections

The result of the upcoming presidential race in the National Democratic Party (NDP) is what political observers are eager to see when the party hosts its biennial Convention on June 23. However, the NDP has announced a number of other internal posts that will be up for grabs.

NDP candidates will also be contesting the offices of vice president, secretary, deputy secretary, treasurer, deputy treasurer, chaplain, chairman of the youth movement, and chairperson of the women’s association.

A media release from the party said the upcoming elections are an extension of the internal elections that were held on February 6 when Troy Christopher and Dr Michael Turnbull were voted in as Chairman and Deputy Chairman, respectively.

Constitutional changes: name swap

Other businesses scheduled for the June 23 Convention include a motion to amend the party’s internal Constitution.

“One amendment being proposed for ratification is that of an exchange of titles and not roles of the President, Vice President, Chairman, and Deputy Chairman,” the NDP said.

Once the amendment is approved, the President and Vice-president will be referred to as ‘Chairman’ and ‘Deputy Chairman’, respectively, while and the Chairman and Deputy Chairman will be referred to as ‘President’ and ‘Vice President’, respectively.

While commenting on the upcoming Convention/election, Deputy Chairman Turnbull said: “The future of the party is bright and the emergence of potential leaders is emblematic of the enthusiasm and passion needed to lead our party for another twenty years.”

Education Minister Myron Walwyn is one of the confirmed candidates for the leadership of the NDP.

And while there has been no official confirmation from any other presidential candidates, political observers suspect Premier Dr D Orlando Smith will be moving for re-election as head of the party.

It is said Health Minister Ronnie Skelton and Deputy Premier Kedrick Pickering are also eyeing the top position.
