VIDEO: Kyron McMaster sets new nat’l record as Olympics approach

With just under two-and-a-half months left till the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, local sprint-hurdler Kyron McMaster has proven that he is in the form of his life.

In his first race since the global COVID-19 shutdown more than a year ago, McMaster competed at the USATF Golden Games at Mt San Antonio College in California yesterday (May 9) and lowered his personal best in the Men’s 400-metre hurdles from 47.54 seconds set back in 2018 to 47.50.

This simultaneously sets a new national record for the BVI in the event.

Meanwhile, McMaster’s time in yesterday’s race earned him second place behind the USA’s Rai Benjamin who finished in 47.13 seconds. Benjamin is the joint third-fastest man in history in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 46.98 — one of only four times in history under 47 seconds.

During Sunday’s race that saw nine hurdlers face-off, Benjamin and McMaster led the pack from start to finish.

Both men now have the two fastest times ran in the world so far this year.

“Congratulations to Kyron McMaster (Lane 6) on setting a new National Record & PB,” said the BVI Olympics who noted that McMaster “is gearing up for the Tokyo 2020 Games”.

The games are scheduled to run from Friday, July 23 to Sunday, August 8. McMaster will represent the BVI alongside compatriots Eldred Henry (Shot Put) and Chantel Malone (Long Jump).
