VIP blaming us for their record of incompetence — Opposition Leader

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government is being accused of incompetence and for blaming the former National Democratic Party (NDP) administration for challenges it (the VIP) continues to face, despite being elected some three years ago.

Opposition Leader Marlon Penn recently lambasted the Andrew Fahie-led government for its apparent proclivity to place responsibility for the VIP government’s failings at the former government’s feet.

“We didn’t use the hurricanes as an excuse like this government is using everything as an excuse,” Penn said during a recent airing of the NDP radio programme.

He continued: “They are now using the war [in Ukraine] as an excuse, they’re using COVID as an excuse, they’re using the hurricanes and all as an excuse now.”

“They say excuses are tools of the incompetent and this government continues to use excuses after excuses for their inability to get the job for this country done,” he added.

The Opposition Leader said the VIP already has a record and has been in power for more than three years and urged them to run on their own record.

According to Penn: “All they do is come on in these same seats every Tuesday night after we come on the radio and blame us for their record.”

“You want people to give you another opportunity based on what somebody did eight years or seven years ago?” Penn asked rhetorically.

“You have to stand up on your record in terms of what you have done or what you’ve not done for the people of the country. That is your record you have to run on,” he argued.

The NDP, which Penn now leads, lost the 2019 polls after governing for eight unbroken years with Premier Dr Orlando Smith at the helm.

Penn hailed the NDP for its foresight in establishing the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) as a measure of stabilising the territory following two devastating hurricanes in 2017.
