The Taddy Bay Airport on Virgin Gorda has reopened.

Acting Managing Director of BVI Airports Authority Clive Smith said the facility reopened at 4 pm on Friday, August 16.

The BVIAA reported the airport closed on Monday, August 12, because of operational issues with the fire truck based at the facility.

Premier and Minister responsible for airports Andrew Fahie later explained that the absence of a proper facility to house the firetruck contributed to the vehicle experiencing the malfunction.

He stated: “The said fire truck, which was purchased in November 2018, was being left constantly exposed to the [weather] elements during the day, due to the lack of a proper garage facility for securing the vehicle.”

IMO this is a direct result of incompetence and poor management over the years. Thank goodness that era is over.

The recurrent failure of the fire pumper is a failure by successive VIP and NDP governments. Both governments failed to construct a proper facility with a bay(s) to housed the fire pumper. Poor planning, gross negligence, poor equipment management……….etc are all causes. Some issues seem to occur regardless of which government is in power. Nothing changed; 6 of 1, half a dozen of the same. Good governance and acting in the best interest for the public good evade governments of all alphabet soup abbreviations. A change, a change for the better is needed. Voters voted for a change on 2/25/19 but the more things changed the more they stay the same.

The structure of government and associated Peter Principle may be one cause of the problem. The system thrust ministers into position with little or no knowledge about the thing(s) they are responsible for managing. Some ministers give it the old college try but come up short. This problem is not unique to VI; it is a regional problem among former Anglophone countries; it is a problem with parliamentary democracies.

Possible solution: separating the executive and legislative branches. They are currently merged. Separating the 2 will enable appointing experienced and knowledgeable professional to lead and manage the various professionals, ie, health, education, labour, public works, social services, engineering, finance, agriculture……….etc. Something to consider for the upcoming constitutional review.

Clearly this government is about getting the job done. When this airport had closed under the NDP the people was not informed and it took a major outcry from the public to get it reopened months after. However this government informed us right away and got the airport reopened shortly.
