Virgin Islander Sheldon Frett lights up LA theatre scene

Actor Sheldon Frett

Yet another Virgin Islander is bringing pride to the global stage, as actor Sheldon Frett joins a major theatrical production in Los Angeles (LA) under the direction of an Academy Award-winning creative force.

Frett, a graduate of the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), is part of the cast for “Master Harold”…and the Boys, now showing at the Geffen Playhouse’s Gil Cates Theatre from April 8 to May 10, 2026.

The production is co-directed by Oscar-winning Tarell Alvin McCraney, best known for Moonlight, alongside acclaimed theatre director Emily Mann. Frett appears as an understudy for the role of Willie in the powerful drama.

Written by South African playwright Athol Fugard, the play is set during apartheid in the 1950s and explores themes of race, power, and human relationships. It centres on a young white boy, Hally, and his interactions with two Black waiters in a tea shop, revealing deep emotional tensions and the fragility of friendship in a divided society.

Frett’s involvement places him on one of Los Angeles’ respected stages, adding to a growing list of international credits. He has previously performed in classical works such as Pericles, Henry VI, and Titus Andronicus, and appeared on screen alongside the late Chadwick Boseman and Academy Award winner Viola Davis in Get On Up. He has also featured in the British comedy series Hitmen and the drama Shots Fired.

Speaking about the opportunity, Frett said he is proud to represent the Virgin Islands on the international stage.

“Being part of this production under the direction of Tarell Alvin McCraney is an incredible opportunity to grow as an artist. I am also proud to continue highlighting the British Virgin Islands on an international stage,” he said.

His latest achievement adds to a steady stream of Virgin Islanders making their mark globally, particularly in sports and the creative industries, and underscores the territory’s growing cultural footprint beyond its shores.

It pleases my heart to see this young man do big things. May more of our young men shine abroad, bc when they stay here, for the most part it seems like they just hang out on the block and get caught up in mess.

Congrats Young Man, keep doing great things.
