VISTS students record strong 77% passes in regional vocational exams

The Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies (VISTS) in Baughers Bay on Tortola.

Students at the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies (VISTS) recorded an impressive 77 percent pass rate in the Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ) exams this year.

The CVQs — which are administered by the Caribbean Examination Council, more commonly known as CXC — is based on a competency-based approach to student training and assessment.

During these exams, candidates were tasked to demonstrate that they were competent in achieving occupational standards that are set by practitioners, industry experts, and employers in the region.

VISTS students demonstrated the greatest level of competence in cosmetology, bartending, and commercial food preparation — subjects areas in which the BVI recorded 100 percent passes.

Continue to support VISTS, next education minister told

While divulging those results in the House of Assembly on Friday, Education Minister Myron Walwyn called on his successor to facilitate continued investment in the technical school.

“I want to say to whoever the minister for education is going to be after the election to continue to support that school,” Walwyn said.

“The school needs some expansion because there are some new programmes that we want to get into. We want to expand into construction, we want to expand into agriculture, we want to expand into many different areas because that school is going to produce those skilled labourers that we’ve been lacking in a long, long, long time.”

These strong results from the CVQs follow news of the territory’s remarkable performance in two other CXC-administered exams — Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC), and the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

The BVI recorded an 87.7 percent pass rate in CSEC this year and a 100 percent pass rate at the CAPE level.

You got the wrong Minister of Education. Remember the one who lower the grades and suffer our kids to make himself look good. Remember the 92% passes on the banner on the round about in Road Town.

What does it matter the numbers that took the exam if 10 persons took the exam at least 7 passed

  4. Tvip says:

While I am happy for the students, it is a bash on the institution. 70% is a C. Not good.

    • @Tvip says:

You guys are sick dreaddd! The 95% OCES CSEC pass rate was in question because you guys felt it was too high and questioned the performance against the rest of the region. The concerns even went as far as talking about the number of candidates registered. Now the CVQ results are here for the Technical School and 70% is a C? SMH…..I guess if the results hits what you think is a B average all will be well…

  5. Confused says:

People come on here talking about the minister lowering grade standards but this is a regional exam does the minister control that as well . All should be congratulating the students but you here bashing the minister. I’m guess when a child brings home a report with 77% and it’s their best we should scold them as that’s not acceptable hmmmmmm

  6. Facts!! says:

To all the negative comments, that cvq exam came from Jamaica not tortola education system so stop the negativity, we went and did our best! Stop talking what you all dont know bout 77% isn’t good, thats Great because that CVQ WASNT GO BOY!!!
