Walwyn calls for housing authority to help homeless

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has urged the government to address the issue of affordable housing faced by residents in the territory.

“Through the establishment of district offices, you get a much better understanding of the challenges that are being faced by your constituents. There are many persons in this country who literally have nowhere to live. Some are living in cars and other conditions that rob them of their human dignity,” Walwyn said.

The District Representative insisted that the issue of homelessness must be given immediate attention by the government and argued that they have not put forward any serious plans to address the challenge.

“No plan has been articulated by this government to tackle affordable housing and I’m not referring to the type at Joe’s Hill Manor. I mean real housing that ordinary people can afford to live in,” Walwyn said recently.

The lawmaker further argued that many persons, particularly young single mothers, are constantly on the brink of homelessness because they simply cannot afford the apartment rental costs on the salary that they collect.

“It is time for the establishment of a housing corporation or authority charged with the responsibility of providing affordable housing, which includes rental accommodations as well as affordable homes for purchase to the people of the Virgin Islands,” Walwyn added.

Walwyn said he commended the establishment of such an authority to the government and pledged to assist in any way possible to make it happen.

  2. Locals are homeless too fool says:

It is our locals that are homeless and can’t afford rent. You see we are so xenophobic that we can’t see. That response above is an example of the level of ignorance that we still have here.

  5. Nonsense says:

We don’t need no Housing Authority, all that will mean is another board to be paid to do not a damn thing. What we need is a properly functioning economy so people can have access to opportunities to take care of themselves. Not everyone will make tons of money but they would make enough to survive. The less fortunate that would most likely be very minimal can then rely on Social Programs for assistance. Government’s job is to facilitate, not get in the way with puffed up bullshit projects. Give people opportunities, come up with a long-term sustainable, sensible, realistic plan. Airport extension has been on the table for 20 years, no new Hotel/Resort in 20 years, no real improvement in anything hospitality in 20 years. The solutions are right there, get the place fixed up and the people will benefit accordingly! Get some work done!

      @nonsense,
Love your comment. Most if not all those political figures has travelled the world and see how other countries has established their nations. Move away from housing project, get the people access to acquire their own, move the airport plans into the working stage and allow iNternational flights from Central America US, Europe and Caribbean I am sick of the constant flam of all this ray, ray of things that should be done years ago.

  6. The Truth says:

Young, single mothers will always struggle for their poor choices. They will struggle financially and they will struggle to educate and discipline their children. Finish your education and get married before you have children. That is the time-tested formula for financial stability and raising happy, successful children.

It’s have a couple right there in road town living in a car for years there are in their late 60,so most likely there in their last days, the car is soo small they could not get a good sleep it that car so road town is a big area so I don’t want to narrow in on them

  14. @Att says:

I am one of them. Born right there in VG. Have extensive and abundant education and professional experience. But, in VG and Tola, my own people made sure i gained nothing from all of the above.

I am one of the homeless. Just as you have not seen the merciless and Godless oppression, so to you don’t see me.

  15. Hmm says:

Who do you call homeless? If it’s an elderly they can be placed at Adena Donovan home. If is somebody with sickness or so I can understand. I see the government building houses for people example Angus of east end I was told he up and down selling illegal stuff and it have mother with kids who cannot afford a two bedroom house to rent but persons are getting homes just because what? They from here. If a young person is homeless then the government can help them for 6 months and within that six months they need to get a job.
