Walwyn challenges Maduro-Caines to a political debate
The National Democratic Party’s (NDP) candidate for the Sixth Electoral District, Myron Walwyn has challenged D6 incumbent Alvera Maduro-Caines of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) to a political debate as he seeks to unseat her as district representative.
Walwyn issued that challenge at the launch of the NDP’s slate of candidates at the weekend and extended it to all the candidates vying to become the next representative of the Sixth District.
He argued that debates provide important insight for voters as they make the critical decision to choose their representatives, and said it is high time the BVI raises its political discourse so the territory can hold elections that are “issues-based rather than [being premised on] mudslinging, lies and melee talk that has characterised our politics for so long”.
“I am therefore extending an invitation to the District 6 incumbent and whomever else that will be contesting the election for District 6 to a debate to assist the residents of the district in making their decision on April 24th, 2023,” Walwyn stated.
This is not the first time Walwyn has called for debates during a general election. Back in 2019, he challenged former VIP Chairman Andrew Fahie to a leaders’ debate but the political event never materialised.
In what appears to be a jab at the former VIP chairman, Walwyn said: “The last time I made a challenge for a debate I never see a person so heavy move so fast yet — [he] ran straight West End and didn’t come back up. But this time now we must have debates in the various districts to assist residents in making their decisions.”

let’s debate if a man charged and arrested for corruption and now before the courts can run for office?
No politician in BVI will ever be willing to debate. None of these clowns have the skills or ability to frame a meaningful debate let alone a rebuttal of an opposing viewpoint. More jokes for election time
Debates are vital. Any candidate not willing to debate should be eliminated.
One of the big problems in the BVI is the quality of the politicians. The other big problem is the quality of the journalists who seem incapable of asking any form of probing question.
The one person ‘media houses’ – by which I mean a loud mouth and her cell phone (when the police don’t have it) – are pathetic fronts for the persons I’ll thought out personal opinions and vendettas.
Answer this question why up to now a court appearance haven’t been made?

She not going to accept… My guess is that none of them want to debate and especially against Myron Walwyn… Debates often reveal that you don’t have no plan or answers for nothing. They want to just say “vote for me” without explaining in detail why you should.
How is it that Alvera was good enough for you to support in 2011, 2015 and 2019, but as she realigned from NDP to VIP she is of no value? Wasn’t you Myron a member of Cabinet during two terms when she was with NDP? How come you didn’t see fit then to highlight all these problems you have now highlighted?
The same issues that you’re highlighting for Hon. Maduro-Caines in District 6 needs to be applied to Kedrick in District 7 and Marlon in District 8. Don’t have energy for Alvera alone when your party mates are equally as guilty.
This behavior says a lot about you Myron as a person which transcends your political ambitions and service. Where is your love for this country when all it seems to us the voting public is that you’re working on a pirate ship with your “I, I” “me, me” behavior.

Myron needs to focus on his corruption court case that is around the corner. He can debate the Prosecutor instead.

I live in the 6th district an NDP supporter. My family and I supported Alvera when she was with the NDP. She tek off and went with Head Coach without no explanation. Why the hell me and family gone follow her. We ain’t no VIP..Alvera it’s a no for you.
