Walwyn: My relationship with Penn is cordial and professional
Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn has described his relationship with National Democratic Party (NDP) leader and Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn as “cordial and professional”, despite political differences and separate approaches to opposition work in the House of Assembly.
Speaking during a recent press conference of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, Walwyn said communication between members was structured and respectful.
“My relationship is professional and very cordial, and I try to always keep it that way,” Walwyn stated. He explained that the opposition uses a preferred method of communication and holds discussions when necessary, including during Public Accounts Committee meetings.
“If there needs to be a conversation, there is one,” he added. Walwyn stressed that each elected member is responsible for how they use their mandate.
“Each person was elected to serve and it is for those persons to be able to utilise that opportunity to serve people… if we all love this country and things are being done that are in the best interest of the country, we should lock hands on those things,” Walwyn stated.
The comments follow months of political tension within the opposition ranks. Back in January, three members of the parliamentary Opposition—Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull and Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather of the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), along with Walwyn of the NDP—announced an alliance with the aim of forming a single political party to contest the next general elections, constitutionally due in 2027.
In March, Walwyn replaced the then-PVIM Leader, Ronnie Skelton, as Leader of the Opposition, following support from Turnbull and Mather. The move may have further deepened the existing rift, with Penn and Skelton reuniting under the NDP banner and not joining the other three for public opposition events.
Despite this, Walwyn told reporters he does not believe the current dynamic hampers his role.
“I don’t think so at all… I will push on, if the other two members are here and if the others choose to join us in the future, they’re certainly welcome to do so,” he said. Penn, who has led the NDP since 2018, previously served as Opposition Leader before joining the National Unity Government in 2022 after the arrest of former Premier Andrew Fahie.
Following the April 2023 general election, he returned to the opposition benches before the leadership change.

Ronnie and Marlon don’t even have respect for you and other members of the public. If they had any they would have showed up and shown out for you. Instead they were in their personal feelings like ENTITLED children. Myron said his relationship with Marlon is cordial and professional. How they feel about him is their business.
I have no quarrel with either man and I value their commitment to public service. Their hearts, I believe, are in the right place. What’s in their heads at times? That’s another matter entirely.

Myron was right to move on from Marlon and the NDP. Marlon hijacked that party and killed it. He was it’s head for
7 years and nothing happened. The people around Marlon need to be truthful with him and tell him that he is not the person to lead. Ronnie needs to retire. He is lazy and his performance as opposition leader was very poor. The NDP has a really big problem on their hands.
