Walwyn wants Prospect Reef progress report

The question of what has been done with the abandoned Prospect Reef development project is once again being raised, this time by Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn.

Walwyn, whose company has managed the Moorings hotel in the BVI for years, is also questioning Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley over his government’s intentions regarding developments in the hotel industry in the territory.

This is according to the House of Assembly’s (HOA) order paper which outlines the subjects that will be discussed in the HOA in a particular sitting.

Walwyn will ask Premier Wheatley, among other things, to provide the timelines for the execution of any plans his government has for the development of the Prospect Reef Hotel

Premier Wheatley is also expected to advise if the government has received any expressions of interest from local or international investors to develop Prospect Reef and if so, how they were handled by his government.

Walwyn also wants the premier to disclose whether any salaries are outstanding to any of the former workers of Prospect Reef and if so, when the government intends to address this.

Premier Wheatley promised earlier this year to engage the Prospect Reef board in issuing a request for proposal to develop the state-owned Prospect Reef.

“We see Prospect Reef as a hotel that can offer convention centre services to our business community and assist in hosting meetings, conferences and so on. So Prospect Reef is a very big part of what we are intending to do and the public should see a Request for Proposal very soon,” Premier Wheatley explained at the time.

Hotel developments

Meanwhile, the Sixth District Representative is also seeking to determine whether there are any current discussions underway for any new hotel developments and whether Dr Wheatley’s government has been actively seeking investors to increase the number of hotel rooms available to visitors.

Walwyn is asking Dr Wheatley to provide complete details of all discussions or expressions of interest if they occurred, and what progress was made after those discussions.

After the 2017 hurricanes, the previous National Democratic Party (NDP) government in which Walwyn served as Education Minister, signed a $90 million deal with ICA (BVI) Group Corp to redevelop Prospect Reef.

That deal never materialised and when the Virgin Islands Party formed the next government, they announced that they were seeking new investors for the property’s redevelopment.

CHUPES! What about Public Library report? What about Rental Expenditures for private properties by Government? What about a report on assessing the structure of old administration and post office. What about questioning what can be done to this structure and future housing of some Government Departments?

  7. Hotelier says:

The government should look at real hotel occupation rates before assuming there is a shortage of rooms. There is not a shortage of hotel rooms.

It is very unlikely that anyone is going to fund a major hotel at Prospect Reef ( other than government which cares nothing for taxpayer money ) Look at Treasure Isle, Hodges Creek. Look at the fact that upmarket hotels Frenchmans Cay and Surf Song never re-opened after Irma. There is no rush to re-open Peter Island.

It would be better to look at alternative uses for Prospect Reef and not get fixated on the hotel idea.

It appears you are still salty from the election. You need to let it go, and understand how the law works, and let the process work itself.

Anyone can be accused of and charged with a crime. Accusations and charges does not equal conviction. The accused has a right to fair trial and will have his day in court.

Before that, the law does not bar anyone from continue going about their lives apart from any restrictions placed on such individuals as part of meeting bail conditions.

In addition, the people of the 6th district voted for the individual despite prior knowledge of the accusations and charge.

Now, if after trial and the accused is convicted, then that’s a different matter whereby a convicted person may be removed from office or they may voluntarily resign from office.

It’s the way the system works not only here in the BVI, but elsewhere as well. It protects you and I .

The bottom line: An accusation and even an arrest does not equate to a conviction. As it stands right now legally, the individual in question is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

We all know why the government took over Prospect reef. to cover-up mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.
We’ve all seen the horrible job they have done. Prospect reef hotel is now just an eyesore and one that will have to be razz to the ground before it can be rebuilt.
All of this was at the taxpayers expense again.

It cannot be anyone else but that sorry excuse for a person. That person who sighs his name as former speaker even though he was only there for 10 days and they had to beg him to please leave. LOL. The thought of seeing Myron back in the Assembly after they all did everything within their powers to keep him out must be eating away at their filthy insides. LOL. Post all the negatives you want you can’t walk in Myron shoes. Only bad and wicked people refuse to see through this case for what it is.

  25. Read the Legislation says:

Instead of spewing piss, read the law and see where if anything at all disqualifies Walwyn from being an elected member based on his current circumstances. We are more about messing up the country for personal gains and not concerned about the progression of our little country. Take politics and greed from your eyes and you’ll see the mess that this current government has this country in since under the Fahie’s administration. The rest of the Caribbean is rapidly moving ahead of us and we can’t see this. Hon Walwyn, keep doing your job by holding the government accountable for the position our country is in today.

Quite agree no hurry on hotel, but our education curriculum is all about service and not manufacturing, so we are subjects of service or labor only, whether in banks offices we are job seekers not raw resources transformation through manufacturing. So we blacks are subjected to condescension all our live as hotel workers.

  27. Eldread says:

Prospect reef should be decided up and redeveloped by virgin island born into various business and government retain some part to invest in a youth detention center for young boys and girls troubled and having run in with the law rather than let them progress to balsom ghut.
