Warning issued for sea bathers, mariners

A warning has been issued to sea bathers and mariners ahead of Tropical Storm Isaac, which is expected to affect the territory on Thursday.

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said seas are expected to become “rough” on Wednesday and might produce wave heights of seven to 12 feet.

“Sea bathers are asked to avoid waters especially on the southern side of the islands and mariners – especially small craft – should seek safe anchorage,” the DDM said.

The DDM also said there is a high chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms Wednesday.

Don’t get complacent, Isaac still uncertain

Meanwhile, joint leader of the National Emergency Operations Centre, Governor Augustus Jaspert has said residents must not become complacent even though Isaac is expected to pass far south of the BVI.

He noted that Isaac’s path and intensity are still “uncertain”.

“Let us continue to carefully monitor the progress of Isaac and any subsequent weather systems that may develop,” he said.

Governor Jaspert said the DDM continues to advance preparations for the hurricane season, which is seemingly shaping up to be active.

He said 21 landbased shelters are at the ready if any storms cause significant impact to the territory this season.

He further said 13 other emergency shelters are undergoing repairs.

“The DDM has also been working to restock supplies, supported by the UK Government at its central warehouse and plans to place these stocks in communities on the Sister Islands and on Tortola,” the governor said.
