Water & Sewerage employee accused of stealing over $42K from department

An employee of the Water & Sewerage Department was granted $80,000 signed bail at the Magistrate’s Court after he allegedly stole more than $42,000 from the government’s statutory body.

Charged with false accounting, theft, possession of proceeds of criminal conduct and breach of trust is Paraquita Bay resident Michael Glasgow.

He was not required to plead when he appeared before Magistrate Ayanna Baptiste-DaBreo on Monday.

This is because the offences for which he is charged are indictable, meaning they are triable before a judge and jury at the High Court.

Allegations

The court heard that the accused acquired the sum over an unspecified period of time when he visited Anegada to collect revenue from customers on behalf of the department.

The Water & Sewerage Department discovered that monies were missing while conducting an audit so they alerted the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

In response, the RVIPF launched a probe and subsequently charged Glasgow with the offences before the court.

Bail

As part of his bail conditions, Glasgow is to surrender his travel documents to police and to report to the East End Police Station every Monday and Friday.

He is to return to court on February 25.

Attorney-at-law Myron Walwyn represented him.

I think that the man should receive a bonus. He obviously found it quite easy to appropriate funds from a very flawed system over a very long time. Time and time again throughout the BVI we see all sorts of businesses doing accounting with ledger books like the 1950’s elsewhere. Wake up people. There are computers and programs to avoid this. Records would not be lost in storms if they were computerized and stored on a server off island. Get a grip!!!!

Baffled over here. If records were lost in the storms there must have been electronic data some where to look at and note that money was missing? Just asking. No one is that stupid to leave paperwork around to be found if they are stealing IJS. The biggest of companies with the most sophisticated systems get stolen from because the people in the system who work long get to understand how to beat the system. There are many cases of this locally, regionally and internationally. People who do it would only hope that they don’t get caught. How people does get themself in these situation buddy. There is a firm belief that that are more in sectors of the public and private sectors but they are clever. However Time Longer than twine and before time catch up stop what you all doing. Waiting for the conclusion on this matter.

and the one on Anegada is owned by an American company and they turned it off a while back because the government didn’t pay so perhaps this is how he was found out and if so he needs to go to be charged for stopping the water on Anegada for 10 days….

This is the same Water and sewage department that put a lock on my meter for 5months and still give me a bill for $115 because the cashier said the meter is not read it is only there so I can get water and my bill is estimated at $23 per month. So although I could not get any water for 5 months because they locked the pipe I still have to pay. How ridiculous is this.
