We must be careful, airing all our dirty laundry damages territory

Minister Vincent Wheatley

Health Minister Vincent Wheatley has accused the opposition of harming the BVI by publicly exposing the territory’s problems, warning that such actions risk damaging the territory’s international reputation.

Speaking in the House of Assembly, Wheatley said debates such as the failed no-confidence motion distract from more important national conversations, including preparations for the 200th anniversary of emancipation in nine years’ time.

“We have to make sure when we stand up here in the honourable House, we ain’t here airing all our dirty laundry about the things we need to fix,” Wheatley said. “But I understand the politics of that. But we must be very, very careful that when we try to make the government look bad, we ain’t damaging the country.”

Wheatley argued that critics of the government were providing ammunition to international observers by airing grievances in public forums. He accused some critics of creating “problems for every solution” instead of working with the government. “We have to be very careful about the things we say in this House because people are listening all around the world. They are listening and they are making decisions based on what they hear from this honourable House,” he explained.

The minister said the opposition’s approach was encouraging damaging narratives abroad. “A lot of negative things that are said in the press, the press ain’t doing no research to find them. They listen to the opposition,” Wheatley insisted.

He urged lawmakers to recognise that the territory was still under scrutiny following the 2022 Commission of Inquiry and the imposition of an Order in Council by the United Kingdom.

“In a time like this, we have an Order in Council over our head. We should come together and unite and show strength and togetherness. You want to come create confusion in the minds of the people,” he argued.

The minister defended the government’s record, saying challenges in areas such as water supply and healthcare were longstanding and not easily fixed. “Nearly all the challenges we have today in the territory are old challenges. They didn’t just happen yesterday. And these are no easy fixes,” Wheatley explained.

His comments come in the wake of the failed no-confidence motion brought by Opposition Leader Myron Walwyn weeks ago. The motion was defeated by a vote of seven to two, with one abstention.

Wheatley said unity was essential if the territory was to move towards greater self-determination. “We can’t stop being cowards and afraid of our own shadows and do what we are supposed to do,” he urged.

If the people we elected were doing the jobs we elected them to do, there would be no dirty laundry. It is merely the fact that many of you are dishonest, conniving and only looking out for yourselves that puts us in this position.
Do the work you were elected to do and be transparent about how and why money is spent and you have nothing to worry about. Now, cart ya MS, election soon come.

In other words, the government must be allowed to do all manner of wrong and the opposition and the public must keep quiet so that other people don’t hear.

ummm guys you are the ones airing it out cuz yall will do a bunch of schemes with the tax money and when one of them fail they make the news…….

also doesn’t help that yall calling dudes with big chains and unexplained explosive wealth as “business men” then we get a bunch of drug bust thanks to the police that yall hate so much and those drug bust end up in the news and sometimes even global cuz of the amount seized…….

yall crying out publicly and posting in the news whenever a well known drugman dies further enforcing to the youths that you can live the fast life and still be called a “businessman” and be respected by the same community that will cry out again about gangs and gun violence……………

we didn’t force politicians to give our cash grants and scholarships to fake farmers, fishers and fake students

heck nobody forced andrew to make a drug deal with undercover cops and end up on the global news… he aired that out himself!

And so what if the residents air out their complaints and dissatisfaction with the country we are not stating any false hood or propaganda——— when we say that the roads are like Afghanistan war zones…

water cutting off after 6pm for decades now,

the government buildings mash up since irma and up to big 2025 can’t fix but we giving money to bank of asia, renting offices to wealthy friends and family and even politicians….flying out business class, greedy bill, parties etc

sewage running on the roads and nearby sea ports

a man died in vg cuz yall had the clinic closed and that made the news on its own (hope them sue yall for that life lost fr since everything is a joke to yall)

there’s no proper price control so prices skyrocket every week while yall friends and family and politicians benefit from 500% off of the lower class and middle class

power cutting irregularly some for maintenance , some for equipment failure some i just dont know but i do know is that we look like any old 3rd world country with all these wires about we head in the big 21st century

banks interest rates highest in the Caribbean and usvi with low interest rates on returns for CD. and that causing any newly built homes to demand such high amount of rent and it ain getting any lower

these are just some of the services or things government can fix or mitigate but yall only service is to the money and yourself (family & friends)

He is to blame for a lot of the issues that we are now fighting through due to the called for COI and you sat and said nothing. While I do agree that sometimes we say too much, unfortunately that is the nature of news, especially when Governments are in their do bare-minimum mode. The cat had your tongue then. So, please, give it back to him. We don’t want to hear it.
