We should only have deceased nat’l heroes! The dead can’t screw up

Fraser

Persons awarded the title of BVI National Hero should already be deceased, Third District Representative Julian Fraser has suggested.

Fraser gave that indication as lawmakers debated the list of persons in the House of Assembly that were selected for the title in honour of Heroes and Foreparents Day celebrated earlier this week.

“There are those who question the names on the list as to why we waited until they have been deceased in order to come forward and honour them,” Fraser said.

He added: “I’m one of those who believe that people on lists like this should be those who are deceased. When you get this honour bestowed upon you, [whenever] an honour like this bestowed upon you, this is a huge honour. If you’re dead, there’s no way you can screw up.”

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley said lawmakers, in debating the issue, were taking a step in acknowledging, institutionalising, and declaring national heroes.

Heroes’ and Foreparents Day was celebrated for the first time in October, 2021, and was established to recognise the outstanding contributions of Virgin Islanders in shaping the territory’s unique history and identity. The new holiday replaced St Ursula’s Day and has subsequently been observed every third Monday of October.

Premier Wheatley described the holiday as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices and patriotic acts of service undertaken by those who have gone before and have paved the way to increased opportunities, greater success, and an enhanced measure of freedom.

The Premier said the initiative was in line with the people and the government’s overall objective to advance and promote its history and heritage while safeguarding the national development of the territory.

I agree! I remember when you all were trying to call PL of onestop a National Shero. Now she and her disgraced cousin have thrown BVI into one of the darkest periods of our history. Due to their greed and vindictiveness. Wait till we dead to determine our worthiness of that title.

More and more despondency is seen with this guy. I am sure there is a lack of better nutrition and quite less minerals in his diet.

Honor is given to all dead or alive. It’s a working process of the achievement that the people are very proud of. Children bring hour to parents by being a good students, sons and daughters who waited to be married before having children bring honour to their parents , employees who reach their target or goals bring honour to the employer and are rewarded.

Those who do achieved excellence why they were alive and no one honour them, they should be honored. Why on God’s green earth someone has to be dead in order for you to honour then?

  10. We Must Honor Those That Fought for us Courageously. says:

The shoulders that Virgin Islanders are standing are all deceased. That history goes back four hundred years plus and beyond. As, when the colonialist and imperialist came plundering they met our ancestors already here. Our history did not begin with bondage; it began thousands of years before. But that history was deliberately and willfully, not transcribed into history books nor passed down.

That is the history that should taught in our school today, but never will be due to people that crossed our paths in the distant past.

Instead, fake lies and history was recorded beginning with Columbus and the colonialist, imperialists and others. They all met us here, yet, and not just the Indians as they named them. Caribs and Arawaks, for example.

Meanwhile, it is because of those said physically strong shoulders, fantastic and resilient deoxyribonucleic acid, strong emotional and psychological strength, hard work a perseverance, and a defined intellect that took us over the greatest of adversities, brutalities, disenfranchisements and oppression known to man.

Not just the men and women who fought the battles, and women fought as well, but the history itself must be honored and taught, least we forget and repeat it all over again.

It is because of those shoulders that came before, those on that list and those who contributed greatly to our survival and continuity that we must bow our heads in reverence and thanksgiving. It is upon the shoulders of men such as Mr. Llyod and Cell Five owner, Mr. Lindy De. Castro, whose name must be placed on that list currently under debate in the House.

The warrior, he among others, were savaged, beaten, and imprisoned in cell number five on old Main Street, thus the subsequent name of his business on the waterfront years later.

Therefore, it would be a disservice to the history of the Virgin Islands and us, and an insult to the warrior Mr. Castro, if he is not recognized by our political entities for his dedicated work.

He, on the frontlines, helped to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. It is hoped, then that the young bloods in office will learn that history and legislate accordingly.

We must honor those that fought for us courageously. Mr. Castro is deserving of that honor.

I agree with Julian. People get honoured whilst still alive with OBE, MBE, Knighthood etc.

This is not correct history. Most are descended from black africans and the white man did not meet them here. He brought them here. Big difference. Others have spanish, even european ancestry.

I doubt that the younger generation of Rastafarians will remember Lindy De. Castro (Ras Uhuru). But I remember many of his unconventional stands for justice; including – as Jesus might have done – over turning the tables at the Bank of Nova Scotia.

  16. Corrupt heroes says:

Let’s revise the list of heroes to exclude all those who were corrupt. Some great people will remain, but some recent charlatans, whose estates haven’t been settled because they can’t admit where all the money came from, will be excluded.
