Weather disturbances developing, potential of hitting C’bean

Forecasters are reporting that the two weather disturbances that recently formed in the eastern Atlantic are continuing to develop.

Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said on Friday morning that the two systems have “potential of reaching the Caribbean”.

Disturbance 1 is still moving west near 10 miles per hour but forecasters say there is a strong, 90 percent chance of development.

“Forecasters continue to predict that if it did reach the eastern Caribbean, it would not do so until late next week,”

Disturbance 2 is travelling a bit faster in a westerly direction near 12 miles per hour. That system also has a 90 percent chance of development, the DDM said.

The DDM further said: “Forecasters predict that this system may become a tropical storm by the time it moves over the southern Cape Verde Islands on Sunday morning.”

Florence, in the meantime, has downgraded to a tropical storm and is still “a safe distance” from the BVI.

It looks like we just might have to change the school calendar in the BVI . Because the beginning of the school year is around the peek time of hurricane season. If you look back at it every time school is about to start there is always a delay from flood to hurricanes and if we are going to be on that September hurricane school schedule we will be forever on a school shift system. But my prayers and hopes nothing pass our way this year.

I totally agree with you it should be august/september. School in july this year was good. I know of one caricome country that closes school in september bvi should do the same. It will be better for the kids. I hope those in authority read these blogs and think about it.

Does the DDM actually have a meteorologist on staff? Because every skilled forecasting service I know of has (correctly) predicted that #2 would head North and not be an issue for the Caribbean, and that Florence would not be an issue for us, either. Spend time focusing on the one that might well cause us trouble, #2, now known as TS Isaac and stop muddying the issue with the irrelevant ones. Isaac may well be an issue, and people should be making their plans.
