Who’s behind the garbage problem in Purcell Estate?

This file photograph shows garbage being piled along the roadway in Purcell Estate.

Although he is urging residents of Purcell Estate to maintain good garbage disposal practices, Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn said he is aware that residents of other communities leave garbage in that area too.

For years, residents have been complaining about the huge pile-up of garbage that is often seen in Purcell Estate.

Walwyn said the problem is partly because residents from different neighbourhoods have a habit of leaving their garbage there while driving through the area to get to Road Town.

“Because of the geographical location of Purcell Estate – vis-a-vis Road Town – a lot of the garbage you see in those bins come from persons outside the district. Some come from businesses in the district and nearby. Purcell is just a convenient place off the beaten path. You just drop your garbage there and you turn off,” Walwyn explained.

Because the area is used as a drop-off site by many, Walwyn said it makes sense for the authorities to increase the number of times they collect garbage in the community.

“You might have to look at how often you clean certain areas, just based on the nuances, individual situations and the geographical locations. I think Purcell Estate is one of those. But this is not an issue for the contractor (garbage collector), it’s an issue for the government because anybody can see that area is a high traffic area and rather than cleaning it once a day, you might have to put in an extra run,” Walwyn posited.

Walwyn said he is set to meet with the Minister of Health to see how the situation in Purcell can be resolved. He said he has also raised his concerns with the Director of Waste Management and the private contractor who is responsible for picking up garbage in the community.

“At the same time, I want to speak to residents as well. It’s our neighbourhood, our community. When you come to the bins, dump the garbage in the bins. There’s no need to dump it on the ground… It’s not a good image for our community,” Walwyn stated.

@turd world Mrs Wright funeral home person wanted to say lady but had a change of heart. She said every piece of garbage you see there is from the expats. Strangely she don’t have an issue sending her workers to collect to expats corpses. I say expats stop supporting Mrs Wrong until she apologises to the expats.

Not sure what you mean it is a cultural thing, several times i caught a business owner from josiahs bay where he live with his business dumping garbage from his business greenland every morning. He used to go around to every empty bin he could find and dump his stuff and not use the bin in his area. He was not local, guess his culture was to dump his s..te on others.

  7. Always governments problem says:

If the garbage bin is full use another one, just tossing it out of your car as you havent left enough time is no excuse, its always government not us, the Minister needs to go hard on dumping and issue fines. Its not cultural, my ancestors kept very tidy home and lands nor is it ‘someone elses’ job to keep our beautiful country clean. Stop being nasty.

  8. Folly says:

That garbage belong to the residents of Free Bottom and Purcell. No one else has to traverse the area to get to Road Town.

Of course she does not have a problem taking the expat money. But the sad part is, she’s not the one doing all the hard work at the funeral home, it’s the husband and employees who made that business what it is. All she want to do is be up and down SPENDING the gwop that come in SMH

I have seen persons come from other areas of the island and dump their garbage right there. Some of them just throw them and couldn’t care less where the garbage drops.

I have seen that guy that makes screens walk to the area of the garbage bin and just throw his garbage on the ground.

It makes you wonder how they keep their homes.

That’s the reputation that is given to people from here by the down island people. Even the Tomians use to call here sewerage people. Shut your mouth about giving them a lessons on clean. So why you all do clean all you selves then?
