Willock lauds Nanny Cay’s free water initiative

Government advisor and political hopeful Julian Willock has praised Nanny Cay Marina and Resort for continuing to provide free potable water to residents as several communities grapple with water shortages.

Willock said the marina introduced the initiative nearly 10 years ago.

“They launched that programme after the hurricanes of 2017, and they have sustained that programme, sustained that effort,” Willock stated.

“I wish to commend Nanny Cay for their efforts in the free water to the people of the Third District and the surrounding communities,” he also said.

Willock described the initiative as an example of corporate support for the community during a period when residents have reported prolonged interruptions to the public water supply.

“That is what I describe as good corporate responsibility, always giving back,” Willock stated.

Water outages

His comments follow reports of water supply interruptions in several communities, including Pasea Estate, Jennings Hill, Fort Hill, Nottingham Estate and Huntums Ghut.

Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer recently said last Saturday that Water and Sewerage Department workers discovered four leaks while investigating complaints about the lack of water. One involved a ruptured main line near the Delta gas station in Pasea Estate, affecting supply to Road Town and surrounding areas.

Rymer attributed the frequent breakages to ageing infrastructure, increased demand and drought conditions. He said underground pipes also made it difficult for workers to locate some leaks because water could surface away from the damaged section.

The minister said the department was working on an interim arrangement to assist people who had been without water for several days. Rymer blamed the wider water crisis on ageing distribution lines, deteriorating reservoirs, pressure-management problems and severe drought conditions.

Servant of the people

Meanwhile, Willock also commended Nanny Cay businessman Miles Sutherland-Pilch for his involvement in community initiatives.

“I know that Nanny Cay, particularly Mr Miles, they do a lot of stuff for the community, but they are not one to always publicise everything,” Willock stated.

“They do it from the heart and not for publicity, which means that they’re committed to the cause,” he added.

Willock said he also approaches businesses and individuals to seek assistance for residents, schools, children, elderly people and those experiencing hardship.

“When I go to corporate BVI or when I go to the individual, it’s always something for my people,” Willock stated. “And that’s why I consider myself a servant of the people.”
