Willock says he is running for Third District office

Former House Speaker Julian Willock has confirmed that he intends to contest the Third District seat at the next general election, ending months of speculation about his political ambitions.

Willock made the declaration during an appearance on the Talking Points radio programme on Monday, stating that he expects to be on the ballot at the next polls, which are constitutionally due by 2027.

“If everything stays on track, I will be on the ballot for the 2027 general election in the Virgin Islands,” Willock said. “That’s for District 3.”

Pressed further about his intentions, Willock reiterated his position, stating: “I will be a candidate for the upcoming general election. It has to be held at least by June, July of 2027. I will be a candidate.”

Lone voice in the wilderness

His announcement comes after recent public declarations by other prospective candidates, including Aaron Parillon, who has also expressed interest in representing the Third District.

Willock, a former Permanent Secretary, Director of Water and Sewerage, and Speaker of the House of Assembly, said his campaign would focus on infrastructure, employment opportunities, housing and the restoration of the Ellis Thomas Downs horse racing facility.

“One of the vexing things in the district that must come back is the Ellis Thomas Downs,” Willock said. “I’m a lone voice in the wilderness calling for the return of the Ellis Thomas Downs.”

He also pointed to ongoing road works and water infrastructure projects in the district, saying improvements had been promised and delivered by government officials.

“It’s easier to sit around criticising everything and opposing everything, but it’s harder to make things happen. And I want to be in the business of making things happen for my people,” Willock stated.

I won’t pick up my marbles

Willock also confirmed that he remains a member of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) and said he intends to seek the party’s nomination for the Third District seat.

“I am a member of the Virgin Islands Party, a long-standing member of the Virgin Islands Party, and I hope to go through their Congress process in getting the nomination to run in District 3,” Willock said.

When asked whether he would run as an independent candidate if unsuccessful in securing the VIP nomination, Willock rejected the suggestion.

“I am not one of those guys who pick up my marbles and run anywhere,” he said. “I am committed to processes.”

Willock appealed directly to residents of the district, asking for forgiveness if he had offended anyone and insisting that his candidacy came from a “pure heart”.

“I come to the people of the Third District with much humility to be a servant leader,” Willock said. “My only job is love for people, hence love for country.”

Willock previously explored a run for elected office at the 2019 and 2023 general elections. His declaration now sets the stage for what is shaping up to be a competitive race in the Third District ahead of the next general election.

  1. District 3 Dilemma says:

District 3 needs another serious candidate to come forward. Fraser has gone by his best date. He can’t properly represent the people of the district anymore. Aaron just is not ready. I am sorry. I like him but he it’s a hard No for me. The community projects he does are helpful but representation is far more than cooking soup and running errands for people. Willock is just a cr**ked show boat. Electing him would be the worst thing the people of district 3 could do. The district needs someone more competent and well rounded to come forward to represent the people.

      • I totally agree says:

Mr. Parillon has been consistant, others have jumped all over the place, eventhough he has not been successful at the polls he consistently have been visible in the community listening to the peoples conscern and have tried to address them regardless of whose party they support….give the young man a chance just like we have given other new comers who have rens for elections in the past, lets not be bias… we keep on saying the young people are the future but yet when they come forward we keep on shutting them done, thats why hundred if not thousands have left these shores and dontinue to leave over the years to live where they are valued and appreciated, we need to stop this foolishness that drives our young people out of the country

    • He’s a winner says:

Funny thing is, Parillon cooks soup, takes the SOUP money and helps the people in his community who are struggling. So keep cooking soup Aaron. Keep doing what you can to help the people Aaron. This country is too accustomed to being robbed they don’t value genuine leadership.

I believe He will be better than any one of them contesting, contested or elected. What he does isn’t what we’ve ever seen before.

I am totally impressed with his ability to push through tough moments and that’s the type of leaders BVI needs.

What is his answer on the consultancy transparency question? Don’t mind the fake bloggers posting the same dribble on all the sites. He has yet to answer the question. And if that is his level of transparency before he even gets in those voters should see the writing on the wall…..

If he can’t answer a simple question about a consultancy imagine what the public will be dealing with if he ever gets in once it comes to transparency. I see murky waters. That may be the slogan the murky waters campaign…..

  6. Truth says:

Any potential Willock may have is destroyed by his overwhelming arrogance. He is just a legend in his own mind. Parrilon reminds me of Kye, very personable, but inexperienced and immature. We need political aspirants who can think and plan 50 years down the road.

If you’re comparing Aaron to Kye then you don’t know Aaron. I’ve never seen someone as dedicated to their community and country like Aaron. Win or lose this brother takes all the bs and keeps pushing forward. There’s not one person elected that’s behaving like or thinking 50 years down the road so stupid comment there. Yall be picking at straws.

  13. CRATERS says:

Does that mean he knows somethings we don’t?

Did he and Fraser have a man to man conversation and based off of that he is now confident enough to say that he WILL run in the D3 as Fraser won’t be?

JW said not too long ago (a week +) that he backs Fraser and would NOT run against him. Now what has changed? Fraser said (same not too long ago) that the proverbial phat lady has laryngitis and won’t be singing in his overgrown Jungle ears!

So who is lyin’ and who’s being truthful????

Mr. Deputy Premier – what’s your take/word on this brash announcement by JW? Is this like Trump announcing the British Prime Minister (Starmer) would retire before his announcement…..

  14. Guest says:

Is Willock signalling that the fat lady is about to sing? Because if memory serves, he previously intimated that he would not mount a challenge against Fraser. Yet his latest declaration suggests a very different posture.
Politically, the more striking element is his insistence that he remains a committed member of the Virgin Islands Party and intends to seek the VIP nomination for District 3.
But the broader question remains. If he once suggested he would not challenge Fraser, what has changed? Is this a strategic recalibration, a shift in internal party dynamics, or simply Willock reading the political winds and deciding the moment is ripe?
His announcement certainly sets the stage for a competitive and potentially fractious race in District 3. It also raises unavoidable questions about what prompted this apparent reversal.
