Works Minister apologises for Hodges Creek road delay

Rymer

Minister for Communication and Works Kye Rymer has apologised to residents and motorists for delays in the Hodges Creek Road project.

The project, which has been delayed for months, has left commuters frustrated and angry because officials have not provided timely explanations. However, Rymer explained this week that the project faced setbacks due to necessary changes in survey and design plans.

He assured the public that the necessary amendments had been made and that the project was progressing.

“We acknowledge the inconveniences this project has caused and sincerely apologise for any disruptions experienced by the community. It is important to note that the project has encountered a few delays due to necessary amendments in survey and design,” Rymer said.

According to Rymer, these adjustments were essential to meet all design requirements before starting the concrete works. Rymer acknowledged the inconvenience caused and assured the community that efforts are underway to move the project forward. “The Paraquita Bay to Hodges Creek Road project is entering the next phase with concrete works set to commence [today] 5th February 2025,” Rymer said.

He further disclosed that previous efforts concentrated on installing conduits for utility upgrades, including electrical lines and HDPE water transmission lines, which he said were essential to ensure that contractors could move forward with constructing road curb walls and pavement effectively.

In October 2024, Eighth District Representative Marlon Penn called for the government to retender its 30-mile road project, expressing concerns about transparency and potential mismanagement of public funds.

Penn highlighted that the road project between Paraquita Bay and Hodges Creek, which cost just under $3 million, encountered numerous problems, raising doubts about the ministry’s ability to manage larger projects.

Rymer urged residents and motorists to adhere to all road signs and instructions from traffic personnel during the ongoing works and to exercise patience as they use the roads. He also thanked the contractors for their patience as the necessary changes were implemented to ensure the project’s success.

  1. Survey amendments ? says:

The survey simply maps out the area of works ,the design has to use the survey, if the survey is inadequate then the design will not succeed . So obviously someone designed something without understanding the obviously inadequate survey or your designers didn’t properly understand the survey limitations but carried on and designed something inadequate .

How come these weird kart before horse type of scenarios don’t happen in the private sector or when rda dealing with a project? All like building a road to nowhere in front of the park and building bathroom with no water going to it etc. not just him either look at the incinerator, all these years later we still stuck at the phase of trying to figure out if it’s even repairable or worth being repaired after it was supposed to be back online from q1 of last year. The asphalt plant for public works mash up before it do a thing. The admin complex taking donkey years to be repaired. It just seem to me like the whole squad just less badd. All this road work and planning going on and I haven’t heard any mention of provisions for telecommunications infrastructure being underground. I just an outsider observing I don’t know what internal challenges y’all facing but it seeming like ayo less badd.

These comments goes to show you can’t please allyo. Do good or do bad.. and that y’all don’t appreciate the works that go behind it.

From now on how about you list what relevant works you have done to support your comment.

  9. Stealth says:

This project was poorly scoped and the amendments needed should have identified upfront; poor staff work. None of the amendments are latent defects and unforeseen conditions. Consequently, as a result of the myopic planning and shortsightedness, this section of road has turned into a travelling nightmare, disaster. Another blogger tagged as participating in a “ rattling derby.” Our poor vehicles are crying out loudly for a break. How many front ends are ruined because of this road disaster? This road was avoidable and is an unforced error. Like government like unnecessary blows. Does the Premier and Marlon Penn traveled on this road daily? And if so what took so long to acknowledge there was a problem. As others have noted here and elsewhere the project should have been done in segments. Do we put carpenter assistants to do heart surgery . Let’s do road work right the first time.

  10. Advice says:

We have to do a better job at communicating. Why is this only being communicated now? If you know that there will be an extended delay for whatever reason, you don’t just leave the voting public to speculate what is going on. INFORM THEM. And not monthssss after you announced that something would have already been implemented. Is this rocket science????? My goodness.
