World’s oldest rum distillery sponsors 49th BVI Spring Regatta

The following is a media release from the BVI Spring Regatta.

Mount Gay, the world’s oldest running rum distillery dating back to 1703, will once again support the BVI SPRING REGATTA, as it has done it for over 45 years now!

Mount Gay, over its 300-year heritage, has always been deeply connected to the ocean and sailing. From its island roots in Barbados, the birthplace of rum, to the tropical climate that influences each bottle of rum and the longstanding connection to sailing, Mount Gay’s history, craftsmanship and community are truly united by the ocean. Through our sponsorship, Mount Gay intends to commit to help protect and sustain this invaluable asset.

In the words of Raphaël Grisoni, Managing Director at Mount Gay Rum, “We have been on a shared journey with sailing from the very beginning: From the 17th to the 20th century as the original means of transport for our rum to the region, the United States and England; as the drink of choice for sailors and the maritime industry as a whole; and then with our support of regattas which began around the mid 20th Century. More recently we have partnered with World Sailing and the eSailing platform during the global Pandemic and now we are setting course on a new sustainable chapter that will continue to strengthen our deep relationship with sailing as we head towards our 320th Anniversary in 2023, and beyond.”

Mount Gay is committed to sustainability and transparent practices to meet the brand’s vision for environmental stewardship and carbon neutrality. As part of its multi-faceted sustainability program, Mount Gay has also partnered with 4Ocean.

This year Mount Gay decided that it would be a sustainable move to use the famous RED CAP 2020 to celebrate the return of the 49th BVI Spring Regatta.

This will be the famous MOUNT GAY RUM Red Cap of the Regatta that did not happen because of the worldwide pandemic. A collector for sure!

  4. Callwood Rum Distillery is the oldest says:

Actually, Callwood Rum Distillery is the OLDEST distillery. That distillery has been in operation since the 1600’s and they are very much still operating. i passed there recently and they were in the process of making their rum.

  5. Callwood the oldest says:

If this is indeed true why isn’t it promoted as a tourist attraction. There are so many sites that can be promoted via a BVI cultural tour. This is the kind of stuff the government need to embark upon with utmost priority. I wanted to show a youngster the dungeon at Pock Wood Pond there is not even a road to it. Everything is allowed to perish. It’s a shame what is happening in these islands. No sense of national pride and our young people are turning into vicious animals while our leaders play. Our people have been brainwashed and are being led to hell. I would love to hear from Amanda Milling why I should stand against Russia in light of the many biological warfare laboratories sponsored by the USA and their role in the corona virus pandemic and other planned attacks. Mr. Putin was right to go in and destroy them. Too much evil masquerading for righteousness thank god they have been caught in their wicked devices. Some of us are wide awake and can’t be fooled.

    • Who to blame says:

I’m one of the family member who own the rum distillery and when I tell you, it is H**L to get the government to help us out. After Irma & Maria, tourist board never once lend a helping hand to assist in the cleaning up with the distillery but right after the owner spent his own money & cleaned up, tourist board came to do their food fete. They only study us when it’s BENEFICIAL to them! Tortola is the pits

  6. Thank you Mt Gay says:

Who cares how old the rum is!? Mt Gay coughed up the money to sponsor the regatta. No money, no regatta!
Thank you is all that you need to say. Love the red hats! ❤
