Xmas on DeCastro Street reels in largest-ever vendor turnout | Event attracts cruise visitors

The 21st staging of the Christmas on DeCastro Street has reeled in approximately 50 vendors — the largest ever turnout in the event’s history.

The street, located in the heart of Road Town on Tortola, was transformed into a beehive of activity with Christmas music, local food, and entertainment.

The event ran from Friday, December 6 to and Saturday the 7th and City Manager Janice Brathwaite-Edwards said the event got off to strong start from day one.

“We have a lot of passengers from the cruise ship passing through, looking for local food and local artefacts,” she said.

Lots of food

Brathwaite-Edwards further said patrons would have had no issue in finding a variety of local delicacies during the event.

“This year, for sure, we have a lot more food than ever. The whole street has moved up about four notches on both ends. This evening we have a plan for some exotic foods like alligator, lobster, rabbit, shrimp, and so that should be interesting and different,” Brathwaite-Edwards stated.

She continued: “This year, one of the highlights is we have a little girl that is about 10 years old. She has a lemonade stand, and she has been selling lemonade since she set up. This is her second venture with us in the city because she did the festival. That makes me feel good.”

Price raised slightly

In the meantime, the City Manager said the price per booth at the event was raised slightly this year.

She explained: “The fee is $400 for a 4×4 tent. In 2019, we do not have any seed money from the late Honorable Delores Christopher, so we had to make some improvising in order to be able to cover our fees. We only put on $50. It was [previously] $350.”

Christmas on DeCastro Street was once again done in memory of the late legislator Delores Christopher who was an integral part of this event.

The obvious location for this is the Pier Park. It is a pedestrian area, with good parking and footfall. The Pier Park cost us all $83 million so let’s make the most of it. The current location is not conducive, it blocks traffic through town.

Jess, if you can see that, why those with a degree and full eye sight cannot?

Makes one wonder the use of a degree and eye sight in this country any more.

Last, why would any one with a tea spoon of intelligence would block the only main thorough fare of traffic vein with an event that could easily be held any where else on the cay.

To end, what the hell did Mr. Lyodd and many others sacrfice their lives for, that proceeding administrators could prove how stupid, ineffective and inefficient their thinking, education and administrative town planning really are?

And we wonder why the limey half iilliterate english man living among us can get in cyber space and plead for the queen to come and take back paradise from the “undeserving low life’s BVIslanders.”
