Years outstanding! Police demand payment of increments, allowances

The Executive of the Police Welfare Association (PWA) has called for the relevant authorities to implement the necessary systems and functions to ensure all members are paid their outstanding increments and allowances.

Chairman of the PWA, Acting Inspector Sean McCall, said the association wants all its members paid in time for May 31, 2022, pay period.

“The Police Welfare Association and its members understand the technical nature of the process involved. However, the members have been extremely patient, diligent, and tolerant in their attempts to bring some resolve to these ailing and ageing issues of non-payment,” Acting Inspector McCall said.

“These issues and discrepancies with payment, which in some cases span a period of over two years, are matters of grave concern and rather troubling as it lends their contribution to the existing annoyance, frustration, and poor morale of its members who are no doubt disgruntled,” the Chairman continued.

Lack of proper procedure

Acting Inspector McCall told BVI News he understands the issue of increments is not for a lack of funding from the government but a lack of proper procedure which starts at the police Force’s Human Resources Department.

“It is an administrative problem which we have been working through for some time now. If I should say what happens when these increments are paid, a letter should be generated from our HR Department. That letter now goes down to the central HR Department for processing. Now, for some time now, every time increments are paid, the police are placed at the back of the bus,” the PWA Chairman said.

“Why? Because of total inefficiency and it is not just incremented. Police are owed allowances that they have not gotten for years. And it is simply because there are inefficiencies that nobody wants to address. We have been very patient. We have been very tolerant. We have been writing and dialoguing and it seems to me that everything is going at a snail’s pace. The police deserve better. So, whatever the issues are, they need to fix it,” McCall said.

He noted the executive of the PWA will meet and determine its next move if the demands are not met. McCall added that the association will also meet with its members as things will not be done arbitrarily.

“We have been meticulous. We have been pursuing this issue for a long time. Can you imagine some officers have been active for a year and have not gotten a dime? You must realise the prices in the supermarkets affects the police officers like anyone else. Therefore, we need to be treated properly and our issues must be dealt with as a matter of urgency and somebody needs to speak up and speak out,” McCall added.

The Chairman said the PWA will continue to advocate for its members to be treated fairly and with some level of priority as the police force forms a major supporting pillar for the Virgin Islands’ national security.

“The Police Welfare Association remains committed and dedicated to its members in the toughest of times. Equally, we stand dedicated and committed to our role and functions to the safety and security of the communities in the Virgin Islands,” McCall stated.

Teachers also. Last increment was for 2017. We need our 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 due increments. The cost of living after Irma and Covid is alarming and the salaries stay the same before these two disasters.

Why are you hiding under the Police article. Teachers need to state their claim in the correct forum like the police. Don’t be afraid to speak up.

It’s good for you all. When NDP announced that they had high registration of companies which made it possible to pay the increments as they get back in office you all thought it was a political gimmick and voted them out. Now here you are almost 4 years later, no increments, our social security has taken a hard hit, possible UK direct rule with possible cut of the public service, and the head honcho sitting in a US prison!

Not paying increments started with the NDP government. How you going to create a problem then act like a hero for correcting it. GTFOH man.

Obviously, if they mentioned that increments would be paid once back in office it’s quite obvious that they were owed and an issue from then. SO YOU STFU AND GTFOH!!!

Furthermore, incompetence should NOT be rewarded. They DO NOT protect and they only serve assinninity, for the most part (not all of them). Use the money to give more training. When they prove they finally have sense, then the money can go toward salaries instead (only a FEW good ones do not fall in this category).

The police force and the DPP need to do a much better job enforcing the laws of the BVI on ALL the people in the BVI. DPP is inept and keeps losing cases when the police evidence is lost or the arresting officer fails to attend court. If you want more money then do your jobs completely not half a**!

At my job, poor performance and failure isnt rewarded with raises and other incentives. The police has a long track record of failure, incompetence and a dash of corruption. All current police should be evaluated and reassigned, terminated or promoted based on performance and results.

How much are increments? a % of salary?

  10. Rr says:

The HR manager is just incompetent. she doesn’t know what she is doing period. Simple issue like appointment letters she can’t address. They have a salary officer at the department, she is useless. Anytime ,you go and enquire about your salary ,she gives you attitude. Too much friendship and personal favors are going on at the police HR unit. It is alleged that some officers are placed in wrong scale for years while others are given 2 to 3 increments unnecessarily. Officers have to go to the central HR in Town to have their concerns addressed. Shame ,Shame !!!!!

Let’s just be real, we are in need of the increment yes! but, is that the real issue at hand NO!

The cost of living has risen insignificantly for years, while both past and present Government elected Officials have given themselves raises and forgotten about the general public.

We the people need a raise in order to be able to sustain the high cost of living.

how many years everything has been increasing while our salaries remain the same.

WE NEED THE MINIMUM WAGE TO BE INCREASED ACROSS THE BOARD. PERIOD

She is indeed incompetent, and NEEDS to go! She is not doing what she is supposed to do, and should be removed or transferred for further training. I am tired of her spin-tales, vague answers and failure to provide no real resolutions.

Oh,let’s also talk about the hiring process, they are hiring one set of nationals in the RVIPF…this kind of practice breeds nepotism. Some people who are hired for a specialized skill, are being hired willy-nilly. People buying degrees online- who is looking into these things? There should be a cap on how many non-nationals that should be hired at a time at, within the force.

It really needs a COI performed on the RVIPF!

It must be hard being you. so much bitterness and sadness. why don’t you encourage some of your nationality to join the force? Maybe we would need to lower the standards for them to pass the entry process? So much malice. Maybe you should buy a degree as well. It could improve your sad existence. I pity your friends and family. It must be traumatizing having to deal with you. At least your colleagues get a a break from your toxicity after each the 8hr shift. You need lots of help.

I didn’t have to buy any of my degrees, I earned ALL of mine.

ARE YOU IMPLYING THAT MORE LOCALS IN THE FORCE PRESENT MALICE????!!!! LUDICROUS! Check the stats, of all the corrupt officers reported within RVIPF, these are notably NON-NATIONALS! And that’s just who they caught. It doesn’t take into account those who fled from here to evade conviction. How many cover-ups of wrong doings have there been of police officers within the force. Don’t come on here catching feelings cause you are one of the people engaging and encouraging in this nepotistic behavior.

I never said non-nationals shouldn’t work here, or that more of my OWN people need to be in the force, I said there needs to have a CAP/STANDARD number for each non-national within the force. I stand by that AND the COI statement. Sad and bitter is what you’ll be of it comes to that!
