Youth Parliament to be back in operation by September

The Virgin Islands Youth Parliament is set to be re-established and up and running by September 2019 under the VIP government.

This according to Premier Andrew Fahie who said he believes the Youth Parliament will contribute to a strong and secure territory in years to come.

“Youth Parliament like others in the region and the Commonwealth will enable young people across the territory to diversify their skills, be grounded in a civic consciousness, national identity and play their roles as the next generation of leaders and visionaries,” the Premier said.

He added that while the Youth Parliament will return, it will be undertaking a few changes from the original structure established back in 2015.

These changes are to include the change from being under the Ministry of Education to now sit under the responsibility of the House of Assembly, a new selection process where 13 elected members will now make a nomination to the Youth Parliament, and a committee of legislators chaired by the Speaker of the House of Assembly will now be overseeing the Youth Parliament.

Premier Fahie also said members of the current Youth Parliament will be receiving letters advising them that their tenure has expired.

He appealed to interested persons between the ages of 15 and 29 to contact their district representatives or any Territorial At-Large member to get nominated.

Once the Youth Parliament is officially functioning by the set date, delegates will be able to conduct meetings, deliberate on current issues, and have provisions available to assist with understanding the functions of the House of Assembly, among other things.

All the VIP is doing is rearranging NDP things and calling them theirs. I was a member of the youth parliament and Mr. Walwyn never got involved in the dealings of the parliament. To suggest that is a bold faced lie. It was Mrs. Tye working along with the Speaker and Mrs. Eversley. This move to have the youth parliament chaired by the speaker seems political to me. This one does. This doesn’t happen anywhere. The youth parliament is a part of the overall youth development in a country. It’s not specific to politics and political involvement. I wonder if the new deputy premier realize what has happened here. I wouldn’t be going back because I don’t think the current speaker is a role model that I want to be guiding me on anything. I don’t know anyone who needs more guidance than him.

The youth parliament was and has been open to all young people. We made calls to get young people involved. They DIDNT COME. It was never an NDP organisation. Always a people organisation. You just didn’t want to be there, nothing to do with political affiliation. Come correct.
