Give telecom firms a bit more time – Vanterpool

Minister of Communication and Works Vanterpool

By Davion Smith, BVI News Online Journalist

Minister of Communications Mark Vanterpool said residents should indulge local telecommunication companies a while longer as they try to improve the quality of their internet services, adding that there have been some improvements in such services since last year.

“If you give them a little bit more time, I believe within the next 12 months I’m expecting a much better improvement,” Vanterpool said in an interview with BVI News Online amid renewed concerns about the relatively poor quality of internet services locally.

He stated that the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) will have to ‘take further measures’ if the telecom companies don’t improve their services to an acceptable standard.

“Over the last year or so, there have been some improvements. We are still not satisfied because there are a lot more improvements to be made. We issued some spectrum last year… We try to encourage them to move along with that. Obviously they have to make an investment to make it happen, and we are doing our best to encourage them,” Vanterpool continued.

“At some point, if it (much better internet) doesn’t happen as we would like, we would have to encourage the TRC to take further measures.”

Vanterpool added that the relatively poor quality internet being offered does not discourage persons from doing business in the territory.

You sound so stupid about giving more time … they have been given numerous opportunities to fix them selves(internet service provided) and choose not too… so we should give them another year to stay the same and just switch small piece to say they did something???

More time so they can milk us for more money? They need to do it now, cut rates, and be given deadlines to get everything done.

It is your voters that put you in to represent them Mark, not play defense for companies milking us of our hard earned money and offering sub standard service. C’mon man! Do what we put you in there for, work for your people! Respect!

Who are the Internet providers there now? I have a person who does nothing but this type of problem resolution if you want I can contact him. He worked for months on a project in our community and didn’t charge us a dime!

Esp when they charging @299 for the white box that you can find on Amazon, same specs, same model, for $30.00, yet the service is not what you pay for. I have the $199.00 package and the internet speed, upload, download speeds, are not what is advertised. That’s a BOLD face lie!

It still better than some of the others, but I feel if you advertise something and you don’t stick to it, you shouldn’t charge me as if I am getting that service. (drops microphone)
