12th COVID case detected! ‘Aggressive contact tracing’ underway as case not imported

A twelfth COVID-19 case has been detected in the British Virgin Islands, bringing the total number of active cases in the territory to three.

Health Minister Carvin Malone said in a public broadcast Wednesday night, August 19 that this latest case presented at the emergency room at the Dr D Orlando Smith Hospital with ‘moderate symptoms’ earlier that day.

The patient has since been hospitalised and isolated.

In the meantime, visitation hours and all other privileges have been suspended at the medical facility. Malone said all staff members who came into contact with the case have been traced and are being assessed.

Case not imported but a community spread scenario

Stating that the patient has no recent history of travel, Malone further said a rigorous contact tracing effort is now underway.

“Analysis is being conducted to determine the level of exposure by each contacted staff member. The apartment building where the case resides is being quarantined, aggressive contact tracing of all close contacts of the individual has commenced and is being accelerated,” the minister said.

“The bars and nightclubs to which the individual has frequented has been identified and aggressive contact tracing continues by the health team,” he added.

The third floor of the hospital has also been converted to an isolation ward that is equipped with previously-procured ventilators.

The Health Minister said the public will be advised of any measures that may need to be put in place to protect public safety.

Well everyone knew who didn’t have their head in the sand that Covid was present in the Territory. Now make masks in public mandatory with penalties of confinement and fine for those that don’t adhere. Then open the Territory and stop the isolation nonsense. Nowhere is safe so move on.

  20. Just my 2 cents says:

Sad Sad Sad indeed. Community spread only arises if there are infected persons within the community. Therfore to boast of being Covid free was a blatant lie and deception by our government.

Assuming that all imported cases were and remained quarantined, where has this infection eminated from. Is it a case of failed detection by our border control? Were cases smuggled from neighbouring USVI etc.? I am certain it was no downislander / expat responsible. Why then our own people putting us in this mess!

Hope in aint a situation where someone wants to profit by selling more covid tests.

This could be as a result of the smuggling activities into BVI borders. Were strippers and sex workers smuggled into the Territory after the borders were closed? Who don’t hear does feel. The borders have been too fluid. S M H

He had to travel or had friends who travel with boat that is. Or they had friends coming over with boat. If he never never leave these shores then there are more persons with this virus out there. All linking to boat travels. My opinion.

The RT-PCR test does not test for COVID-19, so they could have anything… the same ‘symptoms’ are common with many other conditions.

Seems like a case of the childish ignorance that is prevalent to some in this country. And of course they go running to the hospital to put more strain on already strained resources, endangering others after their proud defiance.

  31. @ Soothsayer says:

The COVID-19 RT-PCR test is a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in upper and lower respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, sputum, lower respiratory tract aspirates, bronchoalveolar lavage, and nasopharyngeal wash/aspirate) collected from individuals suspected of COVID 19 by their healthcare provider (HCP), as well as upper respiratory specimens (such as nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, nasal swabs, or mid-turbinate swabs) collected from any individual, including from individuals without symptoms or other reasons to suspect COVID-19 infection.

When something like 98% of patients are asymptomatic it follows logically that there are many more cases on island. Thus lockdown measures are a waste of time, that is unless one actually wants to destroy the economy. In which case lets keep going, one season closed and thats it for a lot of people and businesses.

  34. Which bars? says:

Its silly not advising the public of the specific bars and clubs so we can get tested if a regular patron. Surely these places also need a temp closure like the hospital until tests are returned?

He was smuggled in from St.Thomas, Contant to be exact, the house he was staying has Covid victims, now see if we Tolians would blame the down islanders now.

  36. Soothsayer says:

Exactly, the nucleic acid is not specific to SARS-CoV-2 (not as yet isolated or purified) the test is not reliable for establishing any viral infection. It was not designed for that…
