$97K contract inked to dismantle makeshift ESHS structure in Pasea

A contract valued nearly $100,000 has been issued to execute demolition works at the old CTL building where students of the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) had previously been housed.

Following hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017 and the extensive damage left in their wake to the main ESHS campus buildings in Lower Estate, temporary classrooms were constructed that would facilitate a shift system for students and teachers by utilising a space that was once a business structure. All students have now moved to back to the Lower Estate campus where shifts are expected to continue until construction work has been completed.

According to a release issued by the government yesterday, the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) in conjunction with the government awarded a contract to Construction and Engineering Systems (BVI) Limited on October 3 in the amount of $97,359.00.

The project will return the Old Clarence Thomas building to its original configuration and remove existing equipment and infrastructure.

The Scope of Works for the project includes the removal of lights, power outlets, doors, frames, acoustic ceilings, emergency lights, signage, partitions and the data network which all formed part of the teaching environment.

Meanwhile, works have been delayed on the construction of the ESHS buildings at Lower Estate, but Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has expressed hope that the project will be completed soon.

What is the public works or any other infrastructural department there for? Correct me if I am wrong but why every job in the BVI requires a private contract, meanwhile there are plenty departments and civil servants within the government’s constitution that should be able to complete these jobs. Or is it that the titles for the departments and civil servants are just there for style? The government never fails to amaze me.

Scholarships for the young people are needed, especially in the construction field. So they can come back to the territory, work for government (with proper salaries) and help reduce all these private expenses. The only time we should require private companies, is if we are running out of resources within the government and they should be the last set of people being called to work.

  10. Salvage says:

Reads like a demolition then salvage job. Who owns the salvaged material? The government or the contractor? Hopefully most of the salvaged materials will be recycled and NOT end up in the PP dump on Tortola.

  11. Rip off says:

A detailed estimate related to works should be publicized for all such contracts.

  12. Tech Students says:

Does kind of seem like this might have been a great project for those looking to enter the construction biz via the Tech School or HLSCC….

I am heart heavy to have to say this. But All this Administration and most Heads of Departments is doing is fueling Contracts here and there. The People certainly are perishing because there is No Love for them due to POWER AND GREED! Look around and it’s One Contract to another while there is NOTHING befitting or beneficiary to the People( as a whole).
