Adaejah Hodge mines gold at Commonwealth Games
BVI sprint sensation Adaejah Hodge created yet another bit of history for the territory on Friday, July 31, becoming the first female athlete from the British Virgin Islands to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Hodge stormed to victory in the women’s 200 metres, crossing the finish line in a blistering 22.07 seconds.
“It means a lot to me coming from the British Virgin Islands,” Hodge said after her historic triumph.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe claimed the silver medal in 22.35 seconds at her first Commonwealth Games, while Jamaica’s Alana Reid secured bronze in 22.56, edging compatriot Ashanti Moore, who finished fourth in 22.57.
Hodge’s Commonwealth triumph comes just weeks after she became the fifth-fastest woman in history over the 100 metres with a stunning performance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Competing at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, Hodge clocked a wind-legal 10.63 seconds, producing one of the fastest performances ever recorded in collegiate athletics.
