Additional powers for Governor still a possibility

Office of the Governor

It seems elected leaders are not yet out of the woods and could still see the governor getting additional powers if they fail to deliver the promised good governance reforms recommended by the COI.

This was the impression given at a press conference last week, when Cindy Rosan asked Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley if the threat of additional powers for the governor still looms over the BVI.

In response, the Premier said that the UK Minister for Overseas Territories and Governor Daniel Pruce are better positioned to answer that question.

At the same time, the Premier said he knows his government has to deliver the reforms in a manner that gives the UK confidence to remove the threat of additional powers for the governor.

“What has been communicated to me is that there are a number of things that we have to do to give confidence that we can deliver these reforms on time,” Premier Wheatley explained.

He added that his government gave Minister Rutley an action plan that outlines how they plan to achieve the outstanding COI deliverables and he said the government will ensure there is someone in place to hold persons in government accountable for the deliverables they are leading.

“We‘ll also have a greater degree of collaboration with all the other actors including the Governor and his team to get these things over the line. We are confident we’ll be able to deliver given the deadline stipulated in the action plan,” the leader added.

The threat of additional powers over elected leaders was sounded by former Governor John Rankin before he departed the territory in January. He said the government was not moving hastily on the reforms as they had initially promised.

The threat was reiterated by UK OT Minister Rutley who visited the territory recently and said the UK will not hesitate to invoke additional powers over the government if they aren’t satisfied with the future progress.

No one knows how those additional powers would look, but all elected leaders agree that it would undermine the BVI’s democracy.

Let’s say you get independence then what. You’ll lose all investments from the UK government. It’s more likely that corruption in government would happen again. What would the BVI gain?

Full Sovereignty, just as it is in the UK and free world, and self-rule must be our future destination.

We have plowed our way forward beginning from the first day UK stopped using us for building free wealth.

We have since built our own and should be left unmolested to continue on our own.

That is as simple a statement on this issue that can be made.

Why are there still questions hanging over a people about their right to exist as human beings and chart their course through life free of imperialistic interventions?

The Premier and every other politician and board member in the VI can chat and quote figures about COI compliance all they want but we in the streets are not seeing changes or improvement.

Saying the sky is pink doesn’t mean it is pink.

The UK wants to leave us in a position to self govern. We are not, not when those we put in power keep telling us that clouds are made of cotton candy.

The English UK people are trying to shift the narrative of o self governing mechanisms for the territory to appear as if it is the people who are disagreeing.

Se the record straight by having referandum Mr. Premier. There are white to this date, time andcentury who believe and want Black people to have no reedom and say over their own life.

Meanwhile, there is not a race no where in the world who is constantly digging into. the affairs, interfering into the political matters and otherwise cerating havoc and uncertainity. When are they so obsessed with Black Virgin Island, his life and destiny
