Andrew Fahie should have gotten some support after incarceration

Willock

Former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Julian Willock, has stated that Andrew Fahie did not get adequate support from the government when he was arrested on drug-related charges in the United States last year.

Willock said this would not have been the case if the Virgin Islands had an office that had specific responsibility for diaspora affairs, including assisting residents who get in trouble abroad.

“There are people overseas who want to transition home, there are people overseas who have a lot of questions, they have interest in their homeland and we ought to do something to reach out to the diaspora. That is something I’d like to see this government take on,” Willock said.

He added: “When our people go overseas and let’s say they get in trouble, [we should ensure] that there’s some sort of support base. For example, our former Premier. We’re well aware of his situation. But to me, there was no support base for him. You get in trouble, you’re on your own, brother — and he’s our former Premier,” Willock explained. “I think an office is needed — perhaps in the Premier’s Office with maybe one or two officers — that deals specifically with matters of the diaspora.”

When Andrew Fahie was arrested last year, the government immediately took steps to replace him as the territory’s leader, while elected leaders shied away from commenting on the matter, which is currently before the United States court.

One public officer — Najan Christopher — was charged with breach of public trust after Fahie’s arrest because she allegedly wrote a letter to the US courts stating that Fahie had diplomatic immunity and, therefore, shouldn’t have been arrested.

Since then, Fahie has been bound to an apartment in Miami awaiting trial. He and his co-accused — former Managing Director Oleanvine Maynard and her son Kadeem — all pleaded not guilty to the drug-related charges. However, in the last few days, both his co-accused have signalled to the court that they wish to change their plea to guilty. The Maynards have an upcoming change-of-plea hearing before the court.

He AF should have been afforded legal support from his country as the leader.

Also he should have been allowed to direct his office up and till he was demoted or replaced.

This is why we say it was a coup, he was not afforded recourse or due process from his country.

  18. I agree says:

I must say I agree with Mr. Willock on this one. Just as other Nationalities have their different Associations here, they also have them in the Diaspora and meet ever so often. We need to have the same set up or encourage our Nationals to do the same. It is a positive initiative and will serve our people well. Sometimes our Students are in need and don’t have anyone to turn to if they don’t have Relatives living there. Just as the Government officials when they visit London would meet with our Students, that’s a good thing. We do have a lot of our people living throughout the USA, Uk and different parts of the World. We need to seriously think about this and help to form Associations in the Diaspora. Just imagine one of our Sons from BVI died in the UK during Covid 19 and no one knew to go look for him and even his family here didn’t know until long after he was already dead. So sad. Kudos to Mr. Willock!! A important idea indeed… Maybe during the Census that could be one of the questions to every House-whole and the information could be put together like: Do you have any families living abroad? Where? How many? professions? Just an idea.

Mr. Fahie entered the U.S as a citizen of the U.K. There is a UK Embassy in Miami that he or his family could have reached out to for support.

What is wrong with this guy. He is free to go and give Fahie the aid he thinks he need. Wrong will always have a stamp of right with these people.

I hope the US go easy on Andrew but we can’t pay legal fees for every BVI lander who gets in trouble aboard. Can you imagine the cost from DUIs, speeding tickets, theft, child support, homicide, domestic violence, and the list goes on and on and on.

Wait a minute, didn’t Willock wanted the public to pay for his legal fees?

@I agree. There seems to be some sort of benevolent relationship between the two sets of Virgin Islands. When its voting time, the ship loads come over, why cant they use their voice to help their friends and family who run afoul with the law over on the other side of the channel? Furthermore the Governor from over there gets benefits from over here in the tourism sector, so why not ask him to put in a good word for his colleague from this side, if you think it is necessary to have help for alleged criminals from this side who get caught on that side? Just asking. You all know how to bend over backwards to help others but don’t know how to, or are too proud to seek help from anyone when you need it. Grow up!
