Burglar confesses to stealing $8K cash, jewellery

Kilmo Maduro

Kilmo Maduro, the East End resident accused of burglarizing a Tread Falls apartment of roughly $8,000 in cash and $1,000 worth of jewellery has confessed to the crime.

The 25-year-old man pleaded guilty when he appeared before Magistrate Shawn Innocent on Tuesday.

Maduro also had a number of traffic-related offences brought up against him.

He pleaded guilty to the offences of driving an unlicensed vehicle and driving without the rear and front identification plates. He, however, pleaded not guilty to driving an uninsured motor vehicle.

All of the offences occurred on the same day — October 30 of this year.

Prosecutors claim that on the day in question, Maduro was reportedly seen on surveillance cameras entering the Tread Falls property in a vehicle.

He gained access to the inside of the said apartment through a window and made off with the vault containing the cash, jewellery and a number of keys belonging to boats and other equipment.

When the owners came home and realized that they were victims of a burglary, they reported the matter to the police.

Maduro was subsequently met in Baugher’s Bay and was arrested and charged.

When interviewed, Maduro told police that he spent all the cash to pay bills. He discarded the empty vault along the Ridge Road where it was later recovered. The jewellery, however, was not recovered.

In relation to the traffic offences, the defendant was allegedly caught driving a red car without insurance, front and back number plates, and without a license.

He was subsequently charged for those offences.

Maduro, who is on a $50,000 signed bail, is scheduled to return to court on December 13 for sentencing.

Stephen Daniels represents the accused.

You keep whatever you want in your house. No one has the right to enter your home and remove anything. How do you know so well “who” keeps that kind of money lying around their house? Are you familiar with the styles of a drug dealer or a legit business person begging to be robbed?

No need to get upset. Just that I always hear people being warned against keeping large amounts of money with them, for obvious reasons. But you are right. People are entitled to keep their money in their homes if they want. That is risky still.

The last time I checked the vast majority of people here do not make 8K a month. So if 8K is not a lot of money, you need to have a talk with our employers for us!
